  • Mild Earthquake Western-Chicago-Suburbs Today

I awoke at 4 am today with my bed swaying back and forth for just under 10 seconds. I thought, is this an earthquake...or am I dreaming?...did anyone else feel it?... I wonder if it will be on the news....HAHAHA! I got up few hours later and it was everywhere, news, email alerts, internet, radio.

Barrnone, Carole, Sunshiny1--- Did you feel it? They said it was felt as far as Wisconsin and as far as Tennessee.

    Mild earthquake rattles Chicago area

A mild earthquake shook northern Illinois this morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.8-magnitude quake at 3:59:33 a.m. centered in a farm field on Plank Road near Hampshire and 3.1 miles underground. Initially, it had reported the magnitude as 4.3 with an epicenter about 5.5 miles east of Sycamore.

The quake was felt over a wide area -- from Wisconsin to Tennessee -- but there were no reports of any damage so far, according to the Kane County and DeKalb County sheriff's departments, which are closest to the epicenter.

"We got hundreds of calls," said DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott. "But we have no reports of damage or injuries."
The magnitude and epicenter were revised after the U.S. Geological Survey studied the "wave forms" from the quake, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the geological survey in Golden, Colo.

"The information was better understood," she said.

Wow that is something. I did not know earthquakes would be in that region (but what do I know?) that must have been strange to feel it like that.

YES, Liv, we have a major "fault" here in Illinois, but further south...we get a rumble every so often. I felt like my bed was a bowl of Jello-"Sugar free, of course." This one was very close to our home, didn't know we would have a mini quake this close by.

            Hi Strong.
My husband is out in Orange County on and off since last Jan. He experienced a few quakes there so that's how I knew what it was after hearing him describe the "bed rolling". He was in Yorba Linda last April when that small quake hit there.
I am going for a visit end of this month...Make sure it stops raining, OK?
I don't want to leave 12" snowfalls here in Chicagoland and have to endure RAIN! We will get enough of that here April-May!!!LOL I want to see SUNNY CALIF.

              Re: Mild Earthquake Western-Chicago-Suburbs Today

I got about 20 inches from the weekend storm. And it looks like another 6-10 inches have fallen so far. But the winds are picking up so there is alot of drifting. It's still snowing.

I've been going out every hour to shovel snow off my doorsteps. (Who needs to go to the gym when you can get a good upper body work out shovelling snow?)

                      Thanks Sham. I am fine...

It is a little rare to have a little quake here, usually they are more out toward the WEST end of the US, more like California. This is the third one I can recall.

We have been having them here in Northern Ontario for the last couple of years. They are not very big, but noticeable to the people really close to the area affected. It's shocking since we are in the exact middle of Canada.
