  • Grapefruit

I've been hearing a lot of success stories from people that implement grapefruit along with Atkins. I've been too scared to try it. Does grapefruit really help burn fat along with low carbing?

It shows that they are on OWL rung 5. I thought by that point you could have fruit.

What I really want to know is if there is any truth that Grapefruit really helps burn fat on low carb diets....regardless of rung and diet.

            Sorry about the Rung 5.

Can't help you with the scientific "proof" of whether or not it helps.

Grapefruit is an OWL Rung 7 food (Rung 5 is the Alcohol Rung). And 5 net carbs of grapefruit is roughly 1/4 of a medium sized grapefruit.

Anyhow, I think you need to eat 1/2 a grapefruit with each meal daily in order for the grapefruit to work. And that's way above the amounts for OWL or Pre-Maintenance Phases.

Also, if you are taking any medications, check with your doctor to see if grapefruit won't interfere with that medication. A compound in grapefruit effects the cytochrome p450 system in the liver. Cytochrome p450 is involved in metabolizing many medications, resulting in either completely negating the effectiveness of the medication or making the medication more potent (which may be a bad thing because medications have the potential to be toxic.)
