A year ago, my mom was cleaning out her china cabinet and gave me a set of 'everyday' dinnerware from the late 50s'-early 60's. One of my sisters got a set from the late 60s. And my eldest sister got the set my parents received for a wedding gift in the early 1950s.

The set looked nice, but it looked "smaller". I did some measuring and compared them to the 1997 dinner set I have. The plates (dinner and salad) of the older set are about 1/3 to 1/2 inches smaller than the younger set. The older coffee cups hold 6 ounces of fluid with about 1/4 inch space to the brim, but they hold 4.5 ounces comfortably; the younger set coffee cups hold 8 ounces comfortably. The older bowls hold 1/2 cup; the younger bowls hold 1 cup.

The other sets have similar dimensions when compared to the newer ones.

So, it's easy to see how portion sizes doubled or tripled.

This is very very true! I have a 'smaller' antique china plate that I use to eat most of my meals off of ( i wash it after each meal and noe one else is allowed to use it LOL) Not only does eating off a delicate and pretty antique plate make my meal seem like more of a treat...but the size of the plate controls my portions. When i feed my husband on a regular plate it looks like a monster plate now to me. I can't believe i used to fill one of those with food!

yep I use the salad plate as my plates when I was doing induction just to keep me from piling it on. Now I look at that plate and think it is a big serving LOL

About 7 yrs ago, I lost a lot of weight using portion control. I didn't think about it at the time really. I just didn't have an appetite and I ate all my meals on saucers and didn't go back for 2nds.

It really is amazing how much food you can get onto a small plate like that. :yikes
