  • Gallbladder Disease and Atkins?

I'm having trouble with my gallbladder but want to start back up on this WOE. Has anyone else had gallbladder disease while doing Atkins?
Did you have to cut the fat percentage you were eating?
My gallbladder was still working at 58% when I had my tests done so they won't take it out even though it's causing pain
Anyway, your advice would be greatly appreciated

    Re: Gallbladder Disease and Atkins?

I did (I guess?) about 2 years into Atkins. When I went back to Induction after indulging too much during the holidays, I started having pains that didn't go away, so ended up in the ER and surgery 2 weeks later to remove it (wasn't critical but needed to go). So I probably had it for years (remember having the pain off and on for years) and didn't know it.

Fat didn't really bother me all that much until the last month or so. Certain foods did (like pork, eggs, nuts). After I had it out, I was able to go back to regular eating with no issues. I don't remember limiting my fat intake that much, but my appetite was pretty down due to the constant pain flareups.

I'm surprised they won't take it out. It's pretty easy to do nowadays via laproscopy. Maybe you don't have enough blockage? If it's causing pain though, something isn't right.

Eating enough fat is key to Atkins. What I would recommend is working with different kinds of fats instead, ex. monosaturated instead of saturated (ex. from olive oil, avocados, fish, etc instead of from red meat), and see if those are better for you. Also try and figure out if you have trigger foods that might cause a flare up and avoid them. Also be sure to get sufficient veggies in with meal and perhaps move into OWL and try different foods to see how they affect you.

I would also run all this by your doctor to make sure you're not hurting yourself worse.

Gallstones are formed when you are not eating enough fat. And then they bother you when you do.
I think you'll be fine, once your body has recovered. The other organs have to do a scamble, and take on the gall bladder's job, but most poeple are fine after a few weeks.

I have high cholesterol and it's a genetic thing, too. Believe me I've eaten enough fat in my life! lol
I do think I'll try healthier fats unlike the last time around~you live and you learn! As for trigger foods...eating is a trigger. I don't eat as much as I used to, I just can't. I feel gallbladder pressure all the time. Oh, well. I go in to see my doctor in a few weeks. If it doesn't get better I'll let him know.

          Re: Gallbladder Disease and Atkins?

I had a severe attack about 4 or 5 years ago and was told it needed to come out. I refused and told them I wanted to try to treat it with dietary changes first. The Dr. reluctantly agreed.

Since then I've had 2 or 3 more attacks but always because I ate something I shouldn't have. I've learned my triggers, too much dairy (ice cream) is the biggest one. I've also learned what combos trigger attacks like just a little dairy when combined with high fat like ribeye is a killer. Large amounts of chocolate or yeasty bread will cause minor flares too.

On Atkins I am avoiding my trigger foods so it works for me. Had a few twinges on about day 3 while my body was adjusting but smooth sailing since.

I prefer to keep all my parts if possible LOL

Thanks for sharing your experience, Poobears!
I actually would rather have mine out because I'm afraid it'll get infected and then it'll get extremely complicated.
I am definitely going to try this woe, again.
