    Re: Gout Flareup

Let me try to answer everyone's questions. My DH is the worlds worst about going to the doctor. I have to practically drag him by the ear to go. He got the indomethicin from an ER trip back in February or January I can't remember. The only reason he went then was because he couldn't walk. Flash forward to his endocronoligist appointment. Yes they knew about the gout but wouldn't do anything about it. They say they don't deal in that. I guess it would be the equivalent of going to them for chest pain they would have said you need to see a cardiologist. Kinda irritates me but what can you do? Hope that makes sense.

He did get into a foot doctor on Monday. Once again he couldn't walk and had to go. He didn't have a choice. They injected his foot with something (I wasn't there but my guess would be a steroid). They gave him a script for Voltaran? He had asked the doctor about the allopurinol and he wanted to try DH out on this stuff. I don't know why they wouldn't do the alloupurinol. Any way they gave him a pill form of it and some cream. They gave script for more pain med, flector patch and they taped his foot up. He seems to be doing better.

DH doesn't do sodas, coffee or anything like that. But he does do alcohol. He stopped doing that since he is doing the Atkins and alcohol isn't allowed. He drinks stuff like Powerade, water and I get this drink mix that has no carbs in it from Walmart. It is their equivalent of Crystal Light.

Thank you for everyone being so caring and informative. I am not schooled or anything so when I saw purine diet I thought that meant protein. Gosh if my DH of 17 years doesn't do something about his weight, it will KILL him. I really want to get him to exercising but it seems that every time I mention something about it he says "If my feet aren't bothering me". I don't think my DH is lazy but sometimes I just don't understand. I do try though. I guess I better go because now I am all depressed and crying. I'll try and come back later.

      Only water is water.

All the other "stuff" isn't helping him ... either with Atkins or his gout.

I would make sure he drank only water.

Voltaren is an antiinflamatory pain med like indomethacin.

are they thinking his toe is arthritis and not gout?

if you have a library in your town look for a video for some seated exercises y'all could do together him on the couch and youin a chair. he would have no toe excuse for them.
There are many things like pilates that he doesn't have to stand on his toe to do. not sure he could do all the seated exercise here but it could be a start

I've told him to drink more water. I guess I will just have to wait and see if he does that.

No, he has gout. If you google "Voltaren for gout" you will see that doctors are prescribing it for gout. I personally wish they would have given him the Alloupurinol but there may have been a reason why they wanted to try this stuff first. I just don't know. I like your idea of the seated exercises! I think I will see if he wants to try some stuff like that. I think it is a great idea.

No involved. And your right. No excuses.

Voltaren used for gout is to relieve the pain not to treat the cause. Did the tell him to make any dietary changes or anything other then just give him pain meds?
