  • Stalled weight loss

My husband and I are doing Atkins together. His weight loss has stalled now though. He lost 10 pounds the first week of induction. We're now on the second week and he's stayed the same.

He has an extreme amount of weight to lose. So, that's why we're surprised that he's stayed the same.

Does anybody know why this would happen?

    Re: Stalled weight loss

welcome. first off stalls were defined by Dr Atkins as 4 weeks of no scale nor inches lost so nobody at your house is stalled.

it is common for their to be a scale weight loss hesitation on any weigth loss program after the initial weight is lost. Atkinseers call it PISS but it is just a heesitation.

Have you guys been measuring? if so then you are seeing the inches of body fat being shed this week while the scales lag behind.

what are y'all doing as the mandatory exercise part of your atkins? many folk begin a new to them workout and their muscles retain fluids as they adjust to the new normal load which can cause scale weight loss hesitation.

I'm sure y'all bought a copy of the book and read it so you know what you should be eating and the limits during the 14 day induction plan so that shouldn't be an issue.

If you want to post exactly what's he's been eating, with quantities and net carbs, we can take a look.

          Re: Stalled weight loss

Thank you all for replying back. I really appreciate it. I have a lot of questions, so I hope I don't get annoying to you.

To start with...he's been drinking an Atkins shake for breakfast, then he eats either grilled chicken caesar salad or taco salad with no shell. He knows about his two cups of salad. So, that's his whole lunch.

At night we've strictly been eating meat, and either asparagus or broccoli as a side.

He has been eating Atkins bars as a snack though, and I heard that could stall weight loss.

I understand that we're still in induction, but I guess I kind of thought he would have lost a couple of pounds this week. I don't expect him to lose 10 again at one time.

I'm really watching labels though. In fact, the Atkins bars are the only thing that we've bought that you get from an aisle at the store. The rest we get within the outer parameter of the store. Dairy, meat, produce...

We also walk our dog around 2 miles every few days, and he's been walking to his car instead of taking the trolley.

          Maybe we're just being paranoid.

            >>he's been drinking an Atkins shake for breakfast, t>>

The shakes/bars are not supposed to be meal replacements. He needs food for breakfast.

            >> He has been eating Atkins bars as a snack though, and I heard that could stall weight loss. >>

            You heard correctly.

I would ditch both those products.

Is the taco salad home made? If so, is the taco seasoning from a packet or homemade?

How much water is he drinking?

I don't think he's eating very much food ... I would be starving on that amount ... and he's a man.

              Re: Stalled weight loss

I told him last night about the bars, and he agreed to not use them until induction is over.

He's drinking his 8 glasses of water a day.

The salad is unfortunately from a restaurant, because he started a new job and is in training this week. After this week, he'll no longer being going out for lunch, he'll be taking the same as I do.

He said he's very careful about what he eats when he goes out for lunch though. He only feels comfortable eating those two things.

I never thought about the taco seasoning though....that probably has sugar in it too.

This is a real eye opener to us and we're only in the first few weeks. I can't believe how many things have sugar in it. We're almost better off getting some kind of meat to grill every night with a vegetable side. That's what we did for the first week. We felt like we were eating at a supper club every night. LOL!

I also posted about a quiche that I wanted to make with with tomato sauce in it. I can't find any without sugar in it.

We're staying strong no matter how difficult it may be. We'll just keep reading on here and hopefully figure it out.

I suspect it's not enough water. He should be aiming for 1/2 his current body weight in ounces of water.

                >> I never thought about the taco seasoning though....that probably has sugar in it too.>>

Absolutely ... especially if it's from a restaurant.

                  Re: Stalled weight loss

Read the label and if sugar isn't listed then the tomato sauce is ok. There may be carbs listed but those are natural sugars from the tomato, not added sugar.

If you read the threads about stalls on here you will see one common theme. The majority of them have included shakes or/and bars in their diet. It's not just induction, they are not atkins friendly. Not with the 2002 diet we do here.

What dressing is he putting on his salad and what exactly is in it? Sounds like he's too far off plan to keep losing. Hopefully you can get him back on properly and he'll start dropping again.

He uses plain ranch dressing for his salad, and sour cream for his taco salad.

                      Re: Stalled weight loss

Some ranch dressings have quite a few carbs and sugar. Some are low carb/sugar. It really depends on what's in it. If it's one they are putting on or providing there's no telling what he's eating. I know it's hard to remember the little things but those will be what stalls you out. Also sodium will keep him retaining water and not dropping. The taco salad may be pretty heavy on the sugar and the sodium since their serving sizes on the packaging are usually very tiny servings.

We've already assumed the taco salad is suspect ... and he could very well not be eating enough food ... nor drinking enough water.

I suspect if he starts eating enough clean food, and drinking enough water, things will change for him.

                          Re: Stalled weight loss

are you guys measuring to see the inches of body fat he is shedding this week when the scales didn't move? Many times folk are still shedding body fat after that initial drop but cause the body doesn't like to just collaspe inward upon itself it will try to maintain shape by adding fluids to the places body fat is being removed from.

Becuase the fluid is denser then the body fats we can see inches of body fast shed even when the scales don't validate the hard work being done morphing our bodies. at some point the biochemical interference that added fluid is causing will result in a body chemical being released that will remove that fluid from the body and over night we can see pounds gone from our scale weight even though we didn't do anything different then the previous day when the scale didn't change.

glad you are giving up the frankenfoods.

he also may not be eating enough fat remember atkins is high fat, medium protein, low carb diet

theres no butter or eggs in his diet and the meat hes eating sounds lean

a chicken egg is 61% fat so its always a good choice
