  • 35 day progress-23 pounds gone

So today is 35 days that I have been on Atkins Induction. I started at 284 and today I weighed 261. I can say they diet has been easy for the most part, but I did have 1 cheat. I had a pizza buffet one evening and let me tell you it opened my eyes even more to how I used to eat. While I was eating I was thinking wow all this food is so processed and sweet tasting. I left crammed full and walked home. At night when I was sleeping I had my first attack of acid reflux in many years, it was disgusting. I realized that straying from the diet is not the answer and really it is a waste of time. I do not follow everything exactly but I feel I do pretty good and I am seeing results. I have to say and I know I will take criticism for this but I will be going to europe soon. I will have one evening with my girlfriend and maybe I will have a small cheat, but nothing like the pizza place. I have really conquered sugar and carb addiction. I lately have strong ketone breath but I like it, it taste like sweet sugar So anyway hoping for a strong weight loss month and happy trails.

i look at it this way-- if a person stops getting drunk-- maybe sometimes he can really enjoy a couple of beers if he has the discipline

Congrats, sounds like you're doing well.

Have you considered moving up a rung? Doing Extended Induction can lead to food boredom and cause those "cheats" you described. Which, as many can tell you, may lead to total diet failure.

Rung 1 is just a few more veggies. As you climb the rungs, you might find (as have I) that you don't want/need to cheat because there are many Atkins alternatives that can make up for those cravings (i.e., alcohol or even chocolate).

          Best of luck to ya!

You're not a failure until you quit trying.

Restarted Dr Atkins Diet January 2 2010.
Next mini goal is to get under 300 lbs. Done! 3/8/10
Next mini goal is to make it three months without alcohol. Started 1/1/10 Done!
Next mini weight goal is 289. Done! 4/4/10
Next mini goal is 278 -50 Lbs
Eventually, I'd like to join the century club.

Where in Europe will you be going? A lot of us live in various countries and might can help. Why do you think you will cheat? I find Europe easier to follow this WOL than many of the temptations of the States.

I agree that you should consider moving up the rungs. It does make it much less restrictive. Your choices become much greater. Also, at most restaurants in my country (Holland) you are expected to order a starter and a main course. Two nights ago I ordered a spicy chicken salad and was able to eat the whole thing minus the croutons. Then, I had veal, veggies and a glass of wine. I could have had potatoes and the whole grain bread if I had been on a higher rung.

Maybe if you decide you HAVE to cheat, you can simply eat foods from a higher rung, but still legal foods. You might find that you don't lose weight that week, but you may not even go out of Ketosis.

Another example, many times the pizzas in Europe are very thin crust. I have had one of these a few years ago and didn't eat the outside crust. Perfectly legal on rung 9 (9, right?). I was in maintenance at the time and I didn't gain a thing.

Remember this way of eat is meant to be something you can live with forever. Look at the later rungs. Who can't eat like that forever? Of course, we can. You will get there!!

Good luck to you. Let us know if you need travel tips.

            1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
what the rungs mean to me:
            rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
            rung 4 - berries, melon
            rung 5 - wine -
            rung 6 - beans, hummus
            rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
            Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
            (on to pre-maintenance)

I wish I could be like this... have tried many times, but due to binge eating/ sugar cravings, it never turns out that way. Your progress is amazing, so keep up the good work.

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

Re: 35 day progress-23 pounds gone

i know it is better to never have a cheat-- but for me i feel this can be a prison and it shows i don't trust myself-- i will never go back to how i was before-how do i know this? because Atkins has taught me discipline and to have confidence in myself. When I eat something not on the list, I don't feel so guilty because I know it is just something special. For me Atkins does have strict rules and I obey them, just not 100 percent of the time. I know there will be people here who will soon say oh you are not doing Atkins or cheating or the one bite thing is not allowed. I look at this as a good theory and something to live by as long as possible. I like sometimes the real stuff and no mock or something alternative. So far all is working great
