  • FAGE Yogurt...$$$ !!!

WOW, I finally bought 1 (one) 7 oz tub of FAGE 2% yogurt (they didn't have full fat), and OMG is it good. But yikes, at 140 miles to get it, and $2.99 for 7oz, that will NOT happen very often.

Is everyone else paying that kind of price?

    Hi KLADY-
I am thinking of going to Rung 2 soon, and have been looking around for what I may be buying. My Super Walmart--they sell EVERYTHING! and have every kind of food item you can imagine...and they do not have ANY
full fat yogurt. I never saw the FAGE brand. Next time I go to a non Walmart, I will look for it and let you know what it costs.

      Hey KLADY,
According to this website, the AVERAGE price for 7 oz is 2.79, so if you are out in the "boonies" as we say here in the Midwest, that is why it is a little more. And 2.79 is pretty high as well!

That is outragous! I pay $3.99 for a 16 oz container & can get it at several different stores. They don't always carry it so when I see it I grab it. I have seen it as high as $6.99 at the trendy health food stores & I refuse to pay that price. I won't pay for the privilege to shop there.

you can buy the fat free if that is all they have and just add 1-2 tablespoons of fat to it or eat something high fat when you have it like bacon

Ahh, but that $2.99 was after driving to a "big" city, 140 miles away.....Thanks for the link Mary, looking at the info from it,
            Large, Plain Yogurts, 17.6 Ounces, $4.99 //Small Yogurts, Plain Yogurts, 7 Ounces,$1.79 //Tzatziki,7 Ounces, $2.79
I am certainly paying too much!!! The only place I could find it was at the Safeway store, but I see that Trader Joes carries it. I think the next time I go to Redding or Reno I will stock up

Fage is so sexy, you want to put fishnets on it and spank it. It's worth the money. I buy Greek Gods.

Other brands of Greek yogurt might be cheaper.

FAGE is pretty expensive here as well, but the Greek yogurt I buy is only about $1 for 500 g... and there's no difference in taste, imo.

Oh, and for something similar to Greek yogurt, there's quark cheese... which, at least in Germany, is cheaper.

                    Re: FAGE Yogurt...$$$ !!!

There are other "Greek" yogurt brands, like Chobani. But seriously, I think almost every yogurt company is jumping on the "Greek" bandwagon. Yesterday I saw Dannon yogurt has a "Greek" yogurt line. So it will only be a matter of time when the supermarket brands will also have a "greek" product.

From what I understand, "Greek" yogurt is just strained yogurt. That is, it has more whey (the liquid stuff), removed than regular yogurt. (At least that is how they do "Greek" yogurt here in the US. Perhaps in Greece it's made differently?) And I watched a Jacques Pepin cooking show where he said that the Greek yogurt in the US is nowhere as creamy as the yogurt in Greece, so he boosts the texture of US "Greek" yogurt by adding a few tablespoons of sour cream. That addition, he said on the show, approximates better the texture and flavor of authentic Greek yogurt.

So perhaps a less expensive version of "Greek" yogurt, would be to buy a container of regular, full fat, unflavored yogurt, and dump it in a colander lined with cheesecloth or a tea towel, and allow some of the liquid to strain off? And maybe boost it a bit with some sour cream?

I have tried several of the other Greek Yogurts~Cabot, Stoneyfield, Dannon. NONE of them even begin to compare to Fage. I will stick with the authentic Greek yogurt or go without!

                            KLADY-

I ran over to the Jewel store (owned by Albertson's).
The 7 oz full fat was 1.89
                            The large size was 4.99.
All the "Greek" yogurt is in a separate area.

I spoke to a clerk who was stocking the regular yogurt. He said that they do not even carry Dannon plain full fat anymore, that no one buys it. Everyone is buying the low or non fat, and all in the flavors.

So the whole 7 oz = 6 carbs. I get to eat 5 carbs full.
I get to eat "almost" the whole container???? WOW

And nothing in Albertsons either. At the price differences I think I'm going to try the make your own version. I mean for crying out loud, I paid $5 a pound for jumbo shrimp!!

Now I can get Brown Cow Farms, I'll have to try that and I'll let everyone know how it goes.
