  • Excess skin after weight loss?

I know, I know. Another thread from me. But seriously, those who have lost a substantial amount of weight, have you experienced lots of saggy skin? I'm a bit worried about that. Its been about 19 days, and I've gone from 328 to 306. Thats 22 pounds in an extremely short amount of time.

I do 30 minutes of cardio, and 30-45 minutes of weight lifting. I have not seen any signs of saggy skin yet, but it does worry me. Any tips? I'm only 24, and have heard that my skin may re-tighten on its own. Thanks in advance!

Yes, and it will go away, but it does take time. Make sure you do not only cardio but do some weight lifting. It helps to tone

      Congrats on your weight loss!
You are young, so you have a great chance of that skin tightening up if you get any. You won't see any right away, but later you may see some, and at your age, if you exercise properly, it should go away!

WHOA!!! Keep up the good work!!! That is wonderful!!!

I've lost 100+ lbs in 8 months before, and I did NOT have hanging skin at all. It was amazing to everybody who knew me, I couldn't even believe it. But, following this woe is the best there is!!! All of my skin tightened back up as if I was never that size. I exercised here and there, but trust me nothing major. You're very young, your skin more than likely will snap right back! If mine did and I'm almost old enough to be your mother, then your young skin will snap back I truly believe.
Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.

I have loose skin on my lower stomach but some of that could be having 4 kids too LOL I've noticed in jeans it's fine, you dont' see it. But I think a swimsuit may be out of the question this year. Last year I was bigger but I was firm and it was ok. This year I'm smaller but have this low hanging roll of skin and some left over fat that isn't going to work in a swimsuit unless I go with the skirted ones that would hide it maybe but I hate those.

So I figure if I have to give up swimsuits to look good the rest of the year I'll do it.

I have a swimsuit suggestion: Try something with a wide band around the top of the suit bottom. I have some loose skin on the lowermost part of my tummy left over from having a huge baby via C-section.
A few years ago I had my weight down to 101 lbs-- (which in reality was probably a little bit too thin. (I'm 5'2")) and even then the baggy little bulge was there. However, it didn't show if I wore a bikini with a wide band around the bottom. The band kind of held things in place.

Re: Excess skin after weight loss?

I've lost almost 90 pounds from my highest ever, close to 60 since late last summer.
I have a little bit here and there, "pinch" size, but nothing really dramatic. Some weeks I will have a few places that feel "mushy" or look more loose and I think this is due to weight/fat loss during that time. Then a week or two later I don't notice it looking like or feeling like that anymore, or at least not nearly so much. It seems to correct itself a bit. I'm middle aged, so I don't have the youth advantage that you do. I have lost somewhat more slowly, though, so I guess I'm making up the age factor in my slow but steady pace, lol!

I would never trade my weight loss even if I get some saggy skin by the time I'm done... it will firm back up over time if you stick with it. I would suggest weight lifting several times a week too... you don't have to get all crazy with it to see a lot of results from it, just hit the major muscle groups a few times a week. Even if you can't get to a gym, try to crank out some pushups (even "cheater" styles if you need to for a while - they still help) and some squats just with your own body weight.

Good going so far, keep trucking. It will likely slow down some after a bit, but don't throw in the towel when it does. The only way to get where you are going is one pound at a time, whether each pound takes one day or a week or a month... it's still how you get there. Even those weeks you might not lose much of anything, you are helping to keep yourself from getting diabetes, high blood pressure, bad cholesterol ratios, heart issues and a lot of other health problems brought on by a high carb/high sugar/processed food diet.

EDIT - oops, missed that you are already weight lifting. Good for you - keep it up.

Interesting idea. I also have a pouch leftover from having my children and I'm fairly certain it's there for life regardless of how much weight I lose. Darn kids, LOL.

The band really does make a big difference. Another thing to try is something in a textured fabric to disguise the bulges, or a 1-piece with some shirring on the front. Land's End is a good source for these types of 1-piece suits.

I only had one baby, but he was almost 10 lbs (and I was 109 lbs when I got pregnant so that gives you an idea of relative scale. ). I don't think the doctor made the C-section incision big enough because all the stretching is around the scar. I had no stretch marks until after the birth. (I used to check my "underbelly" with a mirror.) No matter, my son was worth it.

Re: Excess skin after weight loss?

I don't think a band would help where this is. I did try on a wide band bottom the other day and it was a no go also. Not a big deal. I just changed my coming up cruise excursions to not include water things like we were thinking of doing before so there won't even be a need for a swimsuit this trip. With my knee problems it's best I stay off enormous water slides etc anyways. For the land vacation with the kids I dont' have to be in a swimsuit to watch them at the pool or the water parks. I can wear board shorts. Problem solved

Re: Excess skin after weight loss?

At 39 and losing 75+lbs slowly over 2 years with diet and exercise from the very beginning, I do have a little excess skin. Not as bad as a friend who lost the weight quickly in 6 months having lap band and no exercise. It does take a year or more for the skin to tighten up again.
