I've been on OWL for about 2-3 months and altho my aic(I'm a type 2 diabetic) has gone from 6.5 to 5.8, my cholesterol has gone from 236 to 279 and ldl from 187 to 209. My dr has already given me a prescription for crestor that I haven't started yet. I'm debating taking it right now because I've had problems with statins in the past. Can these numbers drop on Atkins or is this as good as it gets? BTW, I started Atkins on OWL because I only had a few pounds to lose, but had awful blood chemistries.

Re: save me from the statins!
Something isn't adding up if you are following the correct parameters of the diet, I can't see why your cholesterol numbers would be getting worse. What about your triglycerides? What is the count on that? You may have some slight metabolic resistance maybe? Reread Dr. Atkins chapter on that, and it may give you some answers. The chapter on supplement could help too. Do you take the omega 3 fishoil?

Re: save me from the statins!
Cholesterol often goes up in the first few months ... that's why it's recommended that you wait 6 months until after starting to have your blood work redone.
>>Can these numbers drop on Atkins or is this as good as it gets?>>
As you read in your DANDR, YES.
However ... diet and exercise alone can't counter high cholesterol that is genetic. If that's the case, you need to work with your doctor.
For right now, I would see if you could wait until 6 months ... let the positive effects of Atkins do their work.J.

Re: save me from the statins!
Triglycerides went from 170 in Sept 09 to 77 in Dec 09 while losing about 17 pounds prior to even reading Atkins. This month the triglycerides were down to 67. My c-reactive protein is now 3.6, but a few years ago it was three times normal. So some improvement has shown up, but so far it's a mixed bag. Maybe things WILL improve after a few more months. And I am trying to be a good girl on the diet.

Re: save me from the statins!
I seem to remember reading that statins are not particularly helpful to reduce cholesterol in women, and that also a high-ish cholesterol is not really a problem for older women (not that I am saying hounded is older or younger
)
If you google statins, cholesterol and women you might get some ammunition to help you in a discussion with your doctor.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Neither are allowed on Induction.
The blackberries would be less of a carb hit than the banana.
Is Atkins just a "diet" to you ... or do you see yourself eating Atkins (once you get to maintenance) for the rest of your life?J.

Re: save me from the statins!
If you've been on OWL for 2-3 months, where in OWL are you? On which rung?
Berries are fine in OWL Rung 4... so I don't see why you would be "bad" eating them."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Re: save me from the statins!
Thanks Georgiana. When I went to my dr a few days ago he told me no more weight loss, even though I wouldn't mind stopping at a nice number like 120, so I think I should probably just maintain now. Does this sound about right? Do lipid levels continue to improve in this phase? He wants me back in June for follow-on blood tests.
