  • Started working out and gaining...

How long does it last? I just joined a gym on MONDAY and instead of losing I have gained like 4 pounds!!! I'm trying not to think about it, but I even "feel" heavier.

I'm trying to say it it just water weight, but is it? If so how long will it last? I am doing some functional training exercises and about 35 mins on the elliptical. That is all I can do for now.

Does taking a diuretic have any thing to do with it???

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

For me, water retention as I increase my exercise lasts for about a week... but it doesn't really help to compare yourself with me. We're all different.

If the number on the scale bothers you, you could stay away from it and focus on eating right and exercising.

Why are you taking a diuretic?

      Amanda,

DEEP Breath ... it's not a real fat gain ... it's most likely water retention.

Your body is likely figuring out "what's going on???" and it will let go when it wants.

Are you eating enough? Drinking enough water?

      >>Does taking a diuretic have any thing to do with it???>>

If might ... if you're not drinking enough water.

I'm not sure, are you saying you are taking diuretics or you are thinking of taking them?

Diuretics cause your body to shed water, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it boosts the process of expelling cellular waste.

There are several of things that could be going on. First, your increase in activitiy can be directing more fluid to the muscles to help remove the cellular wastes associated with increased muscular activitiy. Second, your muscles could be working to catch up to the new workload by repairing and promoting muscle growth. This wouldn't be a major addition to your weight. I believe on the average, a body builder (not on steroids) might add 6 pounds of lean tissue a year. However, the initial increase of activity could result in part due to the increase of water in the muscles but also, overall demand for oxygen could be resulting in increase in blood to the muscles.

The feelling of heaviness or fatigue could be the adition of an increase of cellular waste working to get through your system or the lag time it takes for your system to catch up to the new demand.

Either way, if you are beginning a new phase in exercise and/or the possible use of diuretics, I would recommend doing it under the supervision of your medical care team.

Re: Started working out and gaining...

Thanks for the replies. I am taking birth control pill which has diuretic in it. I have often thought about switching, but not sure.

I do feel puffed all over so possibly it is just the waste needing to get out.

And Thank God I'm not focused on the scale. Actually kinda funny, my battery (which is small, flat, round ones) is dead. The only way I weighed the last 2 times is because I took them out, rubbed together to generate that last energy and put them in and weighed quickly and then that is it... dead again. To be honest, CVS didnt have them, so I'm just wating and LEARNING to follow the plan and trust it will work.

So since I'm taking the diuretic I should possibly be taking in even more water? Average I drink 100oz plus a day.
