  • Laxitives on Induction?

Hi all, I have been taking these natural laxatives for quite awhile, as I have always had stomach problems, gastritis, constipation issues. And atkins does make it a little worse. I have tried flax and also husks, which don't work that great with me, too gentle. Anyways, I don't want to use those chemical laxies so I have been taking these Swiss Kriss all natural herbal laxitives. Here's the ingredients:

Herbal Mixture (anise seed, calendula, caraway seed, hibiscus, peach leaves, peppermint oil, strawberry leaves).

Let me know what you think!

I suppose strictly the seeds would make it a rung 3 food if you were having any quantities of them, but the rest is mainly vegetation, and I imagine you are not consuming a huge number of them if they are in pill form, or is it a powder?.

As with many medications we need to keep taking them till our doctor or our body says we don't need them

At the moment I need to take regular doses of 'movicol' which is 13 g of fibre to regulate constipation from my new batch of medications, but I did ask the doctor to prescribe sugarfree ones, and am adding more flax in my meals to help too.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

BTW you might find that as you climb the OWL ladder and especially add more vegetables that you are naturally getting more fibre so can cut down on the laxatives.

Thanks for the info! I am looking forward to the different rungs, but won't be there for awhile. I don't take much of the laxitives, and they are in the pill form. I will see if it interferes with my weight loss, as today is my re-start day. Thanks!

Laxatives give me the creep. People get addicted to those things and they really can do a number on your natural system. Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Has your doctor recommended these laxatives?

If not, what you've probably done is to train your body to go only with the help of these "pills" ... which is not what "Mother Nature" intends.

Atkinsgirl, yes I can go without them, it's just alot of straining and stomach pain. When I also add alot of fiber, such as when I was on Low cal, I had oatmeal, apples, and prunes...and so on, and they worked good, but still not great. When I went to the doctor for my stomach pain and irregularity, I told her I have been taking the laxitives. She was fine with it, but to not rely on them 24/7. So I only take them once about every other day.

Again ... I suspect you're teaching your body that the only way it will "go" is with a pill.

However, I defer to your doctor.

How much water are you drinking?

Well, thats cool, but I don't suspect that, I know my body, and I know when I can and can't go! I also know whats healthy and whats not, which is why I'm doing atkins! yay!

I'm not so sure laxatives are "healthy".

Me ... I'd rather have a flax muffin.

                      Re: Laxitives on Induction?

i remember before i cut the stems off broccoli and for awhile when i was eating alot of it it was a laxitive effect on me. but since i never get constpated and all that fiber was hurting my gut just almost giveing me the runs i wanted it to stop and i started cutting the stems off my broccoli but when i cut alot of the fiber out of my diet for the first time ever i started geting constipated but it only lasted about a week

so if you go from a high fiber diet to a low fiber diet you may get constipated for the first week as your body adapts

I was trying to search for the amount of carbohydrates in Miralax, when I came across this article where people on Ketogenic and Atkins diets could take Miralax without "significant problems or lead to diet dis- continuation. Constipation can be easily alleviated with minor adjustments in the diet, stool softeners, and laxatives (MiralaxTM)." The article is titled TurnerArticle-2 the mention of Miralax is on page 61. The header highlight says NUTRITION ISSUES IN GASTROENTEROLOGY, SERIES #39 even though the article is about controlling seizures through diet.

It opens as a text download on my computer, not a link. I will post the Google search link and know it is the first hit on the page and is a PDF file.

miralax carbohydrate count - Google Search

Miralax is available over the counter now and is non habit forming we use it in children with chronic constipation for months on end.

The difference is that on a low calorie diet you were also eating low fat. The fat you have on Atkins will also help with your problem.

Choose vegetables rich in fiber and make sure over half of your daily net carbs are coming from vegetables.

Eating as close as you can to 20 net carbs during Induction and moving to OWL on day 15 would be a good idea.
