  • BEWARE when you have a cold

    Halls sugar-free cough drops have a laxative effect.

    I just spent a week off the diet because I switched to regular cough drops. My digestive system COMPLETELY BROKE DOWN the same day I went to work with a sore throat and a bag of sugar free halls. I'm talking noises from my stomach which implied wild animals fighting for survival under my shirt. I had the ABSOLUTE WORST runs I've ever had. ALL. DAY. LONG.

    I could not boggle out what strain of the Black Plague or Swine Flu gave me diarreah IN CONJUNCTION with severe laryngitis. Then I read the cough drop bag, where there's a warning.

    Any advice for the next cold? I could be 5 pounds down if this hadn't derailed me.

    i guess halls sugar free has sugar alcohals instead but people sometimes absorb up to half of them as net carbs but for most people includeing me they give the runs

    LOTS of sunlight and LOTS of cod liver oil

    weston a price shows fermented cod liver oil that has 10x as much vitamin A and 5x as much vitamin D! thats the cod liver oil i want to get but if you can't get it still read this it will help you in picking one out

    oh and also this helps with colds too

      For sore throats there nothing that reliefs it quicker than water with salt and just gargle there as long as you can take it then spit it out..its the best and it is completely sugar free!

      I started atkins in late november but every other week just sort of fell off the wagon and was not working out..late december I started to really follow it and added the gym from november to december I only lost like 7 lbs not following it right..from december to march 18 I lost 50 lbs give or take depending what mood my scale is on lol.

        Were you able to eat on plan ... or did you stop eating on plan, too?

          i didn't go on a bender or binge, but i did eat whole wheat bread with most of my meals just to offer my sickly frame a range of fuel to fight off the cold.

          i'm not worried, this diet is more of a lifestyle and a change of mindset. i'll eat a reduced carb diet for the rest of my life, i'm sure. right back on the wagon.

            Were the list of ingredients Atkins friendly, at least?

            A lot of store bought "whole wheat" bread still has sugar in it ... if not corn syrup.

            And "whole grain" is the kind of bread Dr. Atkins suggested for those that can tolerate it.

              for your sore throat freeze some of your pureed veggies as a frozen smoothie and sip on them.
              if you are in OWl you could do a frozen berry icee too.

                For a mild sore throat, I would go with the warm salt water. (Sea salt seems to work better than table salt.)

                If the rawness of the throat gets real bad take a half cup of warm water, add 2 tablespoons of Hydrogen peroxide and 2 tablespoons of the juice from an alovera plant (you can buy denatured alovera, but why spend money when the plant is just sitting there.)

                Gargle with it until the solution is gone. Awallowing it might not be pleasant, but it won't harm you.

                I used the same concoction when I had my tonscils out (age 22) the doctor seemed to think it healed quicker than he would have expected. I know it made my throat feel better.

                Aloe is known as the burn plant, however, it will help any type of burn, to includ the raw burnt feeling of a sore throat.

                  one time when i was sick and it was takeing awhile to get better i naturally sorta when't off the diet trying to get healthy and ate a bad food with refind grains whole wheat samwidge the bread was very thick too... after eating it i got alot sicker. and not only that a few times when i was testing cheat foods on the diet i caught a cold when doing so.

                  i know for sure i have a definit link that when i eat bad blood sugar spikeing carbs that it does something like lowering my immune system and makes me catch a cold or get sicker if i have one

                  so don't go thinking you need to eat whole wheat and carbohydrates to get over your cold. but i know its hard in your mind when your sick for along time with a cold not to eat the opposite of what you have been eating in an attempt to try and get over it

                    Have you tried making one of the flax 'bread/muffin' recipes? The one I use now is very close to bread in mouthfeel to me, and makes acceptable sandwiches and toast etc without all the added chemicals, white flour, salt and sugar in commercial bread - even whole wheat bread.

                      I agree that the gargles work so much better than the lozenges. Sorry you had such a rough time. It's very good that your positive and are back on track.
