Re: update
Well, I had a co-worker who was overweight (like 60 pounds over) and she actually lost weight while pregnant and managed to be lighter when she gave birth than before she got pregnant... So good luck with this and the new pregnancy...

Re: update
Atkins Diet and Breastfeeding
heres a nice link
As to the ketones, There's no reason to be worried. Breast milk, with its high-fat, low-carb content, is ketogenic for the baby NATURALLY
but anyways thats for breast feeding the current concern here is that you get all the nutrients that your body needs for pregnacy and breast feeding
for example lets say you got organic pasture raised beef liver, organic chicken eggs, organic pasture raised butter, organic Cod liver oil and a good brand, and lots of good vegetables and meats
if you got all them awesome foods you can eat quite low carb and get all the nutrients your body needs for a healthy pregnancy and breast feeding!
however most people don't have acess to such awesome foods so for them to get all the nutrients they need for pregnacy and breast feeding they would need to eat more carbohydrates like at a maintence level of atkins
but don't go thinking oh more carbohydrates = healthier baby because thats not true if you go and eat horrible foods like bread and pasta that will just spike your blood sugar cause insulin resistance and cause insulin resistance in the baby too so i'd say the best way for this to be handled is to eat at maintence
only eat food thats healthy heres a link with tips
Mommy Goes Shopping for Baby Food! Diet and Nutrition for Infant Health.
also this is another really good link it shows how horrible baby food at the store is for your baby

Re: update
You do not want to be in ketosis while pregnant or breastfeeding.
That doesn't mean you have to eat "junk".
You won't be in ketosis at about 50 net carbs ... if you chose wisely, you might still lose some weight.
Keep in mind you're body is building a baby ... that's your first priority right now.

Re: update
Can't think of any nutrients offhand that you'd miss by continuing to eliminate grains, starches and sugars from your diet. Just try maintenance like others have suggested, and I bet you continue to lose weight in spite of the pregnancy. You'll just gain baby and get a better rear view LOL

Re: update
The problem here is not the baby being in ketosis... we're all in ketosis while we sleep, regardless of how old we are, and no one says that's dangerous.Originally posted by ziggy View PostAs to the ketones, There's no reason to be worried. The (possible) problem is the baby consuming the ketones excreted by the mother in breast milk, and also the amount of toxins released from fat cells in the case of very fast weight loss.
Research showed that moderate weight loss while breastfeeding does not significantly alter the composition of breast milk. Moderate weight loss (1-2 lbs a week) is fine... with the extra caution to eat a Maintenance level of carbohydrates."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Re: update
oh i never knew if you shed fat too fast some of the toxins stored in body fat can end up in the breast milk
i wonder if drinking extra water would make it not as bad? if you had plenty of fresh water to help flush the toxins out and to help make the breast milk maybe it be ok
iv been haveing a hard time trying to figure this out but what if a woman is going to breast feed for 2 years but starts the diet and has to start at matainence because shes breast feeding
but she has blood glucose problems its too high and her doctor said she would get insulin shots if she couldnt get it under control so matainence might be too high carb for herLast edited by ziggy; March 30, 2010, 05:26 AM.

Re: update
I think you meant to ask whether it's healthy for your baby, right? It is still healthy for me to lose weight while Im preg since Im overweight right?
Check with your OB on the current wisdom concerning pregnancy weight gain in overweight women. Eat Maintenance-type foods, which are the healthiest for you and for your baby. Shift your thinking from what's best for you alone to what's best for both of you. Most importantly, be very, very sure you clear whatever advice you receive from ADBB with your OB before acting on it. It's not just your life that will be affected.
Edit: I don't mean to sound harsh. It's just that I can hear in your post the lingering disappointment you feel over not being able to continue losing weight, and you need to be very careful not to let those feelings affect your decision-making concerning your baby's health.
I do empathize with you, though. The same thing happened to me two years ago. I was finally getting control of my eating, having good results with exercise, and bam! Found out a li'l blessing was on the way.
I think you may find (depending on how well you feel) that there are still things you can do to keep yourself healthy and fit during pregnancy so you can bounce back that much more quickly afterwards. Good luck to you and your baby.

Re: update
Congratulations on your growing baby
It is funny, we have had several members over the years start their weightloss journey and unexpectedly become pregnant.
Maybe Atkins should be advertised as a fertility treatment as well as a weightloss/improved health/rejuvenating way of eating
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: update
Elizellen -- according to my OBGYN, even a 10% drop in weight can raise your chances of getting pregnant (I have fertility issues.) He said it's not widely explained that being overweight can lower your fertility, because it's not PC to tell a woman her unexplained fertility may be caused by being overweight. I've seen a lot of women here and on other forums who've tried for years to get pregnant and given up, then they dropped just a little weight and were suddenly pregnant. This includes my aunt, who was told that she would never have children. So she decided to concentrate on her health, lost 20 pounds, and then ended up at the doctor because she "had the flu". That flu is turning 16 next month!
And her sister will be 13 in July.
