  • I'm new, I'm fat... you guys are my last hope

    long story asap

    female
49 (will be 50 next month)
    current weight 185
    5'4

I was never over 125 - 130 pounds until Daddy got cancer in 1995 and we stopped running. We had done 58 road races and logged over 1200 miles the year before.

I gained 50 pounds in a year. I thought it would be temporary, but it hasn't been. Attempts to eat 'healthy' are just making me fatter.

I tried Atkins once, and though I'm NOT a meat lover, I was pleased with the results. I got sick (non-atkins related) and gave up.

i've taken diet pills of all kinds, prescription and every quick fix out there.

    I'm getting fatter.

I don't have the energy to begin running again.

I plan to actually begin the diet today. (I teach, they're testing, and I'm sitting here thinking about my next master plan)

I found this place, and hope this works out!

God bless you. You can do it and you don't have to eat a ton of meat- I don't. I do like meat though, but that isn't the 'center' of our eating.

    Good luck!
Keep doing what you're doing & you'll keep getting what you're getting!!!

This was my last hope as well. Almost 1 year later, 70 lbs less, I'm a exercise addict, and in the healthiest shape of my life, I can tell you honestly that this is the ONLY way to live. If you don't mind a little advice I'd say read the book, stick to the rules exactly, give it 3 weeks of complete dedication, and exersise regularly, you WILL lose weight and feel better. Remember the first month is the hardest. This board is the best support you can find so use it! Set your goal and then set your brain to achieve that goal, you can do it!

            Hi and welcome! :wave

1st thing please don't think of Atkins as a "diet." Think of this process as a new way of life/eating. Your getting rid of all the processed crap that you habitually have put in your body for years. You'll start to feel better and the added benefit is you lose inches and weight!

2nd, Stop the negative thinking that nothing works. Atkins will if you believe it will and if you follow the program.

3rd, Get the book and follow it. Start logging your food intake at www.fitday.com. It will help keep you honest. Set a weight loss goal and get a cool weight ticker at www.tickerfactory.com. In the 14 day induction section of this board look for the graphics for your signature post. Go find the Induction one and keep it updated each day. It will put a positive direction in your day. Start moving your bod! Walking is a great way to get back in the groove. Drink your water.

I wish you the best in your Atkins journey. You can do this and get out of the rut your in.

              thanks for the encouragement...

i used to run 30+ miles every week... now i can't get the energy to live day to day it seems.. let alone RUN..

I plan to give it a real try...

I eat a lot of healthy food that i love... fruit, veggies... but I also eat too much junk.. chips, snack cakes, etc..

so... I hope to get on track with atkins... then when i am allowed to eat some fruit... really enjoy it and be satisfied with it..

I can eat a quart of strawberries with sugar and still want a little debbie cake...

                Baby steps!
Walk and you will run again someday. Exercise has always been my downfall. But once I drag my butt and start doing something I do feel good when I'm done. If you need support grab a friend or neighbor and see if they'll walk with you.

Get the temptations out of your kitchen. TRASH BAG! Go shopping today and buy the foods you can eat. Prepare your veggies so they are handy. Try to stay away from the artificial sweeteners until your mind doesn't really want sweets anymore. If it does want something and you are about ready to cheat make the mock danish. It will stop that craving.

PM me if you need a kick in the pants! I'll be happy to try to help.

ok.. going to Wal-Mart right after work to buy the book AGAIN... (so I don't have look for the other one I know is somewhere)

#2... I agree.. about the diet thing.. it's something i need to do every day... not start and stop...

#3... exercise... I honestly have a great treadmill.. and a gazelle.. and free weights... a cario glide..

I have to do more indoors right now because pollen is KILLING me!

I think this is what I've been missing... the support...

my hubby and partner of 21 years is a construction guy.... and plays softball... he's also 11 years younger than me.. so he basically eats whatever he pleases and nothing happens...

he recently broke a tooth.. the dentist fixed it.. but it kept irritating him... in the 2 months it took him to go BACK to the dentist.. he lost almost 20 pounds without even thinking about it... it's not that easy for me..

I have to stop thinking about what I CAN'T have....... and look at what I'm getting... (a better body)

First off, most people here will support you 100%, but realize that some of them think that Atkins is the only way to lose weight. That is not ture, but because Atkins has worked for you in the past, perhaps it can again get you going (even though you were unable to stick with it, which is not atypical).

Anway, I used to be a sprinter in high school but after that high intensity training, i hated running and i did not run or jog for years afterwards.

Now I jog 2.25 miles every morning 6 days a week and love the rush afterwards.

I started out walking, and steadily increased my pace and aftr a few weeks i was jogging at a slow clip.

I decided that every single day i would strive to do better than the day before. Even if that meant just one more minute on the treadmill, or one level higher on the intensity just for the last few minutes.

Each day i slowly increased my intensity and/or duration.

You too can get back into running, but it is best to not jump back into it, because those extra 50 lbs are taxing your heart more than they did before.

Focus on the nutrition first and make sure to start exercising - even if it is not running at first.
