Not a good combination...lemme tell ya.
Yesterday I made an almond MIAM for breakfast, ate half, gave the other to my husband. Got to work and started feeling off. I didn't eat lunch I felt that bad. By the time I got home last night I just wanted to lay in bed and go to sleep because my stomach just hurt so much.
I got up this morning, and I felt way better, but still wasn't that hungry. I grabbed a slice of cheese, and headed over to my parents house because I promised to help clean up the ravine behind their backyard.
After doing about a quarter of the scrub was cleaned up, I realized I was in need of some water. I yelled for my son to grab me a bottle from the fridge, and by the time he came back my vision because tunneled so much so that I could barely see the bottle he was handing to me. My hearing got all muffled as well. I opened the bottle, took a couple slow sips, then turned around to sit down and then my vision went all crazy like somebody upped the exposure of it 1000X. I sat there for a good while sipping the water, and the only thing going through my head at the time was, "OMG I haven't lost all the weight I want to yet, what if I pass out and my Dad has to call an ambulance to come get me? I'll be mortified!"
My vision returned to it's normal state, and everything started getting louder again. I sat there for a little while and talked to my Dad about what just happened...I don't think I gave off that it was as serious as I thought it was, so he was still clipping back the scrub. I asked him what he thought it was, and he figures probably low blood sugar, and I should go eat a piece of candy. I thanked him for his diagnosis, but told him I would find a piece of fruit or something a bit more "on plan" for me.
I assume it was a combination really of lack of fluids and low blood sugar because of how the water helped me regain my vision and hearing, but because I was still pretty shakey that's where the blood sugar came in. I guess because I have no real glucose stores, my body was shutting itself down slightly. I went inside, grabbed a banana, some kielbasa, and some cheese. I figured the banana would be good for instant glucose, and the meat and cheese would be good to maintain after the initial glucose spike wore off. At the time I just needed something.
So - in the future, I will remember - when doing outdoor work, stay hydrated, and eat beforehand.
