  • Rant- Why is everyone telling me........

I will eventually need to eat more carbs?

Why? My best friend, husband and dad all questioned me in a week's time. My dad asked me why Italians can eat pasta and not gain weight? He was trying to get me to eat mashed potatoes and corn at Easter Dinner. Maybe because Italian's don't gorge. I don't know, I am not Italian. I am an American addicted to refinded sugar. I rebutted telling him the point of Atkins was to get you unaddicted to sugar and white carbs. Seriously, nothing healthy can come from them. Is it ok every once in a while, yes. Not daily as my parents like to eat them.

I further stated that white carbs make me fat so why would I eat them? Obviously what ever I have done has made me lose weight and keep it off for 2 months now. My dad asked me if I was ever going to cheat and I told him I had but it's not often. Jeez, give me an 'ng break.

He said I would need carbs for energy. Hmmmm, why does he have to take a nap everyday and I don't? I have energy, too much of it. And why can't I get my carbs from veggies, yogurt and nuts? Why do I HAVE to eat flour/white/refined carbs? And my parents wonder why they are fat and have no energy. Then he tells me to eat my carbs in the morning. Actually, new studies show eating carbs in the morning make you more hungry. A high protein high fat meal in the morning will satisfy you all day long.

But what do I know because he's my dad right? Sometimes parents are not always right and they are not going to pursued me to eat unhealthy. How f'd up is that??

Thank you for letting me rant I needed to get it out.

He's your Dad and he worries about you. He is only doing what he thinks is best. Yes he's wrong but it sounds like his intentions are good. I'd cut him some slack and just go on with your eating plan without stressing over it.

Maybe there's a little bit of guilt creeping in. Your parents are getting older and maybe the years of eating lots of highly refined carbs are starting to catch up with them. In their defense, they probably ate (and fed you) the way that experts for years told them was healthy. That whole lie is coming unraveled and they may feel betrayed.

I kinda know how you feel. When my mother in law found out how long I have been on Atkins (7 months) her jaw dropped. She thought thought that was way too long. She is a physicians assistant who doesn't agree with the Atkins philosophy.
I don't see her very often though and every time I do I am smaller than the time before.
Results don't lie. Just keep eating the way that makes you happy.

Re: Rant- Why is everyone telling me........

I think my dad thought I took the WOL "too serious." As most of you know I don't take it as seriously as some because sometimes I go off plan and deal with the consequences. I made them ham, mashed potatoes, corn casserole, green beans and squash casserole. Oh and rolls my husband bought. I ate the ham, green beans and squash casserole (genaw.com website).

My parents sure fed me very poorly. I reflected on how poorly my mom ate this weekend and your jaw would drop if I told you. I also think she is a closet eater which scares me. Although I have known that for years. I used to do the same thing. Make people think I don't eat a lot but eat a lot alone. How can I fool anyone with an extra 20 lbs on my body, you know?

I tried educating them on why I chose Atkins:

            1. Reduce cravings for sugar
            2. Feel fuller (to reduce gorging)
            3. Lessen the affects of blood sugar issues (which are completely gone)

I told my dad Atkins geared his book to Americans because it's what Americans need. A WOL away from cravings since that was my demon. SWEETS. You can see my battle since they gave my daughter so many cookies Friday when I was out that she still has diarrhea. Come on, that's not a way to live or treat your body.

My family eats horribly too, it's just something I've learned to accept and try not to focus on. You'd think with the high rate of diabetes, high bp, strokes etc in our family they would take a closer look at what they eat but it's not going to happen because of me, so I just try to fix my own eating. I was also one to binge eat when I was alone, no one knows how bad I was, I never did it when anyone was around. I know Mom is the same way but she'd never admit to it.

thats so true il never understand why people would rather eat food that taste maybe a little more yummy and then have there body suffer greatly cause of it

my mom eats complete junk and her body is falling apart because of it she has such horrible eczema that she has to wear bandages and gloves on her hands now

but besides all the junk/posion she eats she has been takeing cod liver oil recently and she said it made her hair alot smoother or something and i guess thats a start. i just wish she would atleast give healthy eating a chance though

Re: Rant- Why is everyone telling me........

Everytime I see my Dad and Sisters, they all tell me "you look really good, but you can't stay on the diet forever, its bad for you and then you will just gain all the weight back".

All I do is tell them, until they have read the book from cover to cover, its not up for discussion. And as a side note, the poison they are putting in their body should be of more concern to them than the eggs, protein, oils, and veggies I put into mine, oh dear.

Trust me, I understand how frustrating it can be to have family ridicule. I just know that if I keep chugging along, and finally lose all of this weight and bring a copy of my blood analysis with me when I am in maintenance, maybe then it will serve as proof that the diet is healthy.

My biggest pet peeve - I love how everyone think's that Atkins is just their version of the induction phase, because "thats what they did in the early 2000's". Seriously, if I have one more person say to me "how can you eat no carbs for the rest of your life, its not sustainable", I am going to beat them over the head with the book.

Hope that makes you feel better

Thanks carbonator and Ziggy! My mom's body is falling apart too and I am scared for her and my dad. I thought my dad was all about low carb. But apparently he is back to eating any carbs before noon and none after. That's not good either. I told them to read the book.

And I had 3 glasses of water with my glass of wine and I put ice cubes in it to water it down.

That reminds me of the bad old days when I was quite a drinker (in my early 20's) and always made sure I had as much water as I had drunk booze before going to bed to avoid a hangover Though I didn't drink wine but whisky in those days.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
