  • Question-I ate popcorn...

...at the movies last night. Now I am not going to try and pretend that it got the best of me or that I had no control. I decided to eat some, and it was delicious.

Now my question is why I didn't go out of ketosis. I checked my urine when I got home (trace), before bed (trace), and then this morning (large). I even lost 4/10 of a pound. Is this indicative that my CCL is high?

I am back on track. I had a small atkins friendly dinner and did some extra on the treadmill, no cravings. My little popcorn binge also helped me decide that I can move on up to rung 2. Up till now I have been really afraid to climb the ladder but now I am thinking maybe I will be OK.

So any thoughts from you all would be great. I want to know if I am figuring this right or not before I make any changes.

    Re: Question-I ate popcorn...

The fact that you didn't go out of ketosis may or may not have anything to do with eating popcorn. Ketones are typically higher after a long period of rest, exercise, or if you are not sufficiently hydrated. The fact that your ketones tested higher following an increase of sodium intake (popcorn), exercising and sleeping are not necessarily surprising.

I find that my food/exercise choices don't show immediately on the scale anyway. I could eat a chocolate bar today (GASP!) and see a drop on the scale tonight followed by a 2 pound gain by tomorrow afternoon. The same may or may not be the case for you.

Having said that, I still see no reason you wouldn't move on to rung 2. You may or may not have a high CCL. I would continue to test for that number based on eating the right foods on the rung you are on while considering the popcorn consumption a cheat and moving on.

Good luck. I'm glad to hear you are back on track without further incident.

Maybe it won't show up right away. I hadn't thought of that yet and this is my first cheat so I don't know if it will take awhile to show up. The high CCL thing is nice to imagine and dream about though! LOL

Did you check your 14 Day Induction loss with the charts in the book? That tell you what kind of metabolic resistance you have. Then you can use that to check the CCLL chart in the book, so you will have an idea of what range you can expect.

The one thing about the CCLL chart is that if you become a "regular exerciser" (by Dr. Atkins' definition), then your CCLL may be higher. 2Big had a CCLL in the 100s and mine was about 50 due to that "regular exerciser" thing.

The sticks don't really react to a particular food. Remember, you can spill excess ketones even if you're not doing Atkins.

The sticks don't tell you if you're doing Atkins properly.

They do tell you you have good hand-eye coordination though.

Well stink-a-roo! I'm up 3 lbs today Apparently my cheats don't show up right away either. A least there weren't any cravings and I am back on track.

And, the popcorn may, or may not have had a part of that increas in weight.

                  Fluctuations happen!

DOn't beat yourself up over slipping off Atkins. Just admit to yourself that it happened, re-commit yourself and get back on track.

I don't know how many times I have derailed myself because I lost focus, had a break in willpower or just screwed up.

At least the break was over popcorn, yes, high in carbs, but also high in fiber. It could have been much worse... it could have been instant mash potatoes and gravy! Yikes... absolutely nothing good about that!

It's the old "falling off the horse" story. Just as long as you get back on the horse, you should be back in the running again quickly!

Saying "at least" isn't the best way to handle what you did. All choices have consequences. While you can't undo the past, you can be better prepared for future choices.

"At least" is a compromise ... it's not the way to do things.

                      Re: Question-I ate popcorn...

Life is full of compromises. "At least" Didi stepped up, recognized there were consequences to what she did and decided to move forward with correcting it.

Also recognizing that the consequences could have been much worse had she made worse choices or had she decided that she had "failed" and decided to just quit Atkins. Too often that is the result.

So to realise that, no matter what happens, it could always be worse, helps to maintain a positive attitude. Since she was the one who stated she had messed up, she has to be able to "forgive" herself. If we always look at it in the form on "consequences" we frequently will beat ourselves up (or down) and that negativity is counterproductive.

So, regarding the forbidden popcorn of the past, learn from the history, then leave it behind you.

                      Didi:

I coach a youth marksmanship team. I always tell them once the trigger has been pulled, you can't take the shot back. Worrying about the points you gained or lost on a shot you no longer have control of is wasting time and negativily effects the next shot(s.) Neither can you worry about your final score. Trying to anticipate when, where or how well you succeed, before you get there also distracts from what you are doing now. Periodically, take a look back, look for what you can learn, realize there is nothing you can do about the past. Look forward to make sure you are heading to where you want to be and then worry about the next shot (or in our case the next meal, the next bite). Finally, the contest (shooting or eating) is not a competition to see how you stack up against the next guy. It is a journey of self improvement with the need for periodic reflection, review and adjustment.

                      And...

Every now ant then you need to say "at least"...

At least I'm on track NOW!
At least I didn't stray from the path too far!
At least I didn't put off starting the search for the new me for another week, month or year.
At least, there are others in this forum willing to point out that the journey to good health has on and off ramps, detours, construction delays and the possibility of a few flat tires.

And, every now and then, when we are sitting by the side of the road, out of gas...

AT LEAST there are those willing to stop and help out, instead of driving by with their windows rolled down yelling "all choices have consequences."

Thank you forbey so much for the encouragement it means more than you can imagine.

I made the decision to cheat, I owned up to it, and I made the decision to not give up and keep going.

In the past one slip up would have turned into - well today is messed up so I'll just do what I want and start again tomorrow, and then well its Thursday I might as well take a long weekend so I can start clean on Monday, then Monday would come and I would just not have the will power to start again.

Yes my "at least" was a recognition that my slip up could have been much worse and that I was blessed to have come through it and be able to get back on plan and keep going.

I don't mind atkinsgal08's comment though it was a bit surprising. It did make me think.

You need to figure out why you made that decision. Before it becomes your ongoing decision.

And if you're going to cheat ... pick something better than movie popcorn!
