  • Irritated Stomach?

I have just started my diet, and I have found that it upsets my stomach. Is this normal? I do not have a Gall Bladder, so I am thinking that might be the reason behind this irriation.

Any of you experienced Adkins people have any advise? or insight on this?

You may not have a gall bladder but the liver makes bile and excretes it into the small intestine as it is produced/needed. The gall bladder is only a storage place for bile.

Many people feel sick the first few days of the diet and usually passes in a few days.

Stick with it and drink lots of water.

This is from an old Atkins.com FAQ (from 2002-2003):

"I had my gall bladder removed sometime ago and want to do Atkins. However, when I eat a lot of fat I get the runs. What can I do?

You can follow a lower fat version of Atkins. Use fish, poultry, lean meats, and low fat cheese (in moderation) and lots of vegetables. Avoid creamy salad dressing; instead use olive oil and vinegar or a mustard based dressing. Eat nuts only in moderation. Don’t fry foods, and use lean cuts of meat. Stay away from processed meats such as bacon and sausage. Supplementing with unsweetened, smooth textured, orange-flavored Metamucil daily will help bulk your stools. Take 1 tablespoon in a full glass of water and drink immediately."

And notice it says lowER fat, not low fat.

I've also seen people without a gall bladder who are doing fine without lowering their fat intake.

Are you eating more diary than you were pre-Atkins?

Are you consuming any products sweetened with artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols?

I discovered in the early days that I had the same problems - I found that plentiful egg consumption in a single day is my culprit - I can have egg but I just have to be careful how much egg I might have in a day - I rarely do egg salad anymore because that causes me problems. By the fifth day I was fine.

I had my gall bladder taken out while on Atkins. No noticeable difference.

All kinds of effects can happen when you change your diet and/or which foods you eat. Be sure to track what you do eat. It could be a reaction to a certain food too.

If you think it's the fat content, aim for less saturated and more mono-saturated fats (ex. olive oil) and less red meat. But it is key to keep the fat content up.

You might also want to post your menu for review. Others here might have some ideas on how to tweak things or find some problem spots in what you're eating.
