  • Exercise?!

I'm not trying to find excuses to not exercise (I realize I probably am though, which is why I'm posting this), it's just soooo hard to find the time. This is my day:
4:30am wake up, take a shower, get dressed, my husband and I make lunches, breakfasts, get the baby ready, bag packed and out the door by 6am.
6:30 drop the baby off at my moms (who takes him to daycare at 8am).
    7am-3:30am work
4- 4:15pm get to daycare to pick up my love and leave by about 4:30pm.
Get home at 5-ish (usually I try to make dinner the night before) heat up dinner, wash bottles, set the table, spend time with my love.
5:30pm hubby usually gets home by this time and we eat dinner.
6pm dinner is usually done. I clean up the kitchen, wash dishes and start getting food together to cook the following nights dinner.
7pm AJ's bath time and try to have him in bed by 8-8:30pm, depending on how hard he fights it.
8- 8:30pm Start preparing dinner for the following night and usually finish around 9:30 or so.
I tried to use the time while dinner is cooking, or afterward to work out in the living room but it's so hard with my husband there. Once, he actually sat on the couch with a bag of potato chips and was instructing me on how to properly perform a push up, while POINTING at me with a chip!!! Plus, our house is only 900 square feet and we only use 600 of it for living space (the other 300 is our basement which holds all of our crap and I REFUSE to go down there as there is no exit in the event of a fire). By 9:30pm, I am so tired, I can barely see straight!! I usually crash, without even washing my face or changing out of my work clothes (yep... rarely have a chance to pee after I get home, let alone change my clothes!!). I do HATE exercise... it bores me to death, so I realize I probably am being a little overly dramatic about the whole thing, but that's why I'm posting this, to see if anyone can see something that I'm not. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated!!

    Re: Exercise?!

I walk on my lunch hour every day with a lady I work with. I also have started riding my bike to work (but I'm not picking up a baby on the way home). This adds about 20-30 minutes to my daily commute, but I don't have to find "extra" time to exercise.

If you walked at lunch every day & did an hour each day on the week-end...that would be a great start! How about looking into "Mommy & baby" yoga or something like that for the week-end?

I only get 30 min for lunch, but something is better than nothing, I guess. As far as my hubby helping out more, he's actually very helpful. He takes care of things like the lawn, helps with the vacuuming (as it is done every day because AJ is a crawler), takes care of our animals (2 dogs and a cat)... cleaning the litter box, cleaning up poop in the yard, etc.. While I wash dishes and start getting the food together, he spends time with AJ and occupies him so that I can get things done. As for AJ's bath and bedtime, we would both love if he could help more but AJ usually protests to daddy putting him to bed and it takes twice as long. I think I will look for a buddy who wants to start walking during lunch!! That sounds like my best bet right now. Thanks ladies!!

            Re: Exercise?!

spend time with my love. why not spend that time going for a half hour walk? even at a slow pace you can probably walk a mile and half in a half hour. it's so nice out right now, put the baby in the stroller and make it a family thing. the other option is to wake up at 4 and put some sort of half hour cardio in before the day starts.

you can think of me when you get up. i am up at 4am monday thru friday and in the gym by 5. i train until 7:00 then shower up and make it to work by 8. i work from 8-4:30 and usually get home about 5:30-6:00. i eat some dinner and then do something until about 8:00. i was spending that time reading and studying atkins but now that it is nice i am getting out every afternoon and doing things around the house. 8:00 comes and i enjoy and hour or 2 of tv and get set to do it all over again.

i know with a child it is more difficult but you have to do something for yourself. i think a 1/2 hour a day is reasonable for now.

              Re: Exercise?!

the other thing you can do is fit your training in on the weekend. give yourself an hour or two both saturday and sunday and then pick one other day during the week so you are getting 3 days in.

                Re: Exercise?!

LOL... I used to take him for walks when it was nice but I ended up a) feeling guilty that he was stuck in a stroller instead of me playing with him, and b) felt so rushed to get everything else done that I became overwhelmed and gave up completely. I thought about getting up at 4am. A half hour of sleep doesn't sound like it would matter much, but believe me... IT DOES, lol. I may HAVE to do that though too. If I get up at 4am and can get 30 min in and walk on my 30 min lunch break... that may work!!

                  Re: Exercise?!

i know all about that extra half hour. it is a good thing i train with a friend otherwise i think many mornings i would just stay in bed. i didn't mind it all that much when i was weight training but now that i am staring down a 2 hour cardio program i don't want to get out of bed. i push myself though and when it is all over with i am so glad i did it.

the trainers i speak with at my gym all say regardless of what diet your on, training or any physical activity early in the morning is great. it gets the furnace going. you put in a solid half hour walk at about a 20 minute mile (that will give you a mile and half) and then have breakfast and your day is going to be great. i find i am much more inspired after training hard in the morning. it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the day.

                    Re: Exercise?!

I'm going to try that. I was setting the alarm for 4am when I first started Atkins, trying to fit in some kind of exercise routine, but my husband and I ended up hitting "snooze" until 4:30am. I have absolutely NO determination or motivation at that time of the morning. I am going to try again though. The extra sleep feels soooo good but I know the exercise will help me more than the extra sleep.

                      Re: Exercise?!

The in-home walking with Leslie Sansone is an excellent program. You can get a "mile" in in less than 20 minutes, and it includes upper body work. If you can squeeze that in once a wek, with weekend walks, you'll do well.
Don't feel guilty about stroller rides. The baby needs to see the world.

If you are working and have a baby to care for I can imagine it is hard to get excercise in!! The weekends are good for walks........excercise without knowing you are doing it! or an exercise vid in the eve ...but I bet you are soooo tired! Things will get easier once your little one is older and you get a few more hours "me time" I really wouldn't worry too much at the moment.......you have made a huge sacrifice changing your diet so don't get stressed about how much you exercise...carry on and get a walk or swim with the family on the weekend

                          Re: Exercise?!

With going to be late I wouldn't get up 1/2 an hour early for exercise. Your body needs its sleep. It can't function without proper rest. Also at lunch you NEED to eat. If you only have 30 minutes and walk for most or all of it, when will you eat? While exercise is part of the program many can lose without exercising, especially in the beginning. I think exercise is important but not at the sacrifice of getting needed sleep or spending time with your child when you are gone a lot.

Like mentioned as he gets older it will get easier. Also it's easier to focus on one major lifestyle change at a time IMO If you get yourself stressed and worn out will you have the willpower to stick to your eating plan?

Sound like you have a lot to do. Maybe walk some stair when you can - park a tad further away so you have walk a tad faster, squat when you brush your teeth in the morning. Have an exercise band hanging around so you can train your arms and legs while you chat up your crawler. But yeah

You spend a lot of your time in the kitchen!

Have you thought about making large batches at once, then freezing dinner sized portions for convenience? Or buying some of your meats frozen and grill-ready (like salmon burgers, beef patties, etc?)

What is it that you are cooking that requires so much preparation? Is it just new recipes for Atkins that is taking more of your time than usual? There must be a way to shave some of your kitchen time down and get you out walking. Do you have a stroller to take baby?
