  • Question about estimating carbs for a burger w/o a bun.

DH wanted to grab something for dinner for Sky (she's not feeling well) as a treat, so she picked Jack in the Box. I ordered the Sirloin Cheeseburger without the bun. Here's what it says on Jack's website for ingredients:

100% Sirloin patty with American cheese, red onions, lettuce, tomato, pickle strips and Peppercorn Mayo sauce on a bakery style bun

Since I ordered without the bun, I'm thinking the only things with carbs are the red onions and tomato and perhaps the cheese. Do you think I'm forgetting anything? I'm not sure how many carbs to count this as, though I'm sure I'm still under my 20 carbs for the day.

    What do y'all think?

I found a carb-count for this online, and it said 11 carbs. I don't see how those ingredients could be 11 carbs......

Cheese for sure. All cheese has carbs.

Lettuce and pickles have carbs, too. In fact, the pickles could be the kind pickled in sugar.

      Mayo also has carbs.

      Those are often inaccurate.

On their website, you have the option to personalize the meal by eliminating some parts of the sandwich. Without bun, it has 6 net carbs... one from everything other than meat.

        Awesome--thank you so much.

Now you've got me stumped though....I wasn't aware that cheese and mayo have carbs. On the mayo package, it says 1tbsp=0 carbs. So how do we count?

I'm confused as to how I'm supposed to count carbs if I can't trust the labels?

Labels will round ... as they're allowed. Labels, unless you're in the UK or EU, are the least reliable.

We count by using a trusted carb source such as the USDA at www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

or a program such as FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or All Things Food and Diet - FatSecret

Or ... you can look up many things in the carb counter in the back of your book.

And don't forget to read the list of ingredients ... if the ingredients have carbs, then the end result can't be 0 carbs.

Thanks Atkinsgal, that was something I did not know. I usually like to use the atkins carb counter if there were no nutritional facts to refer to, but I think now I'll check the carb counter for everything.

Which one do you mean? The one on their website? It has a number of errors.

Well geez, that sucks. Yeah the website one.

I guess I'll go check out fitday.

Both Fitday and Fatsecret use the USDA database.

A problem with relying on the Atkins carb counter on the website is that you don't know which items aren't correct, unless you double check everything. In which case, why use it at all!

The USDA can be downloaded to your PC here:

Ha ha, and I JUST opened another thread asking for this very information. Thanks J. I appreciate your time. Will download that.

One more question, then I promise I will leave you alone......if the USDA can be downloaded, is using fitday just for the benefit of tracking your food?

                      I wouldn't say "just" ... but yes.

You can only look things up on the USDA site ... you would have to journal your food somewhere else.

I actually keep a paper journal, and use Fitday for trouble shooting.

Right, I keep a notebook--it's just easier. I've tried online food trackers before and I'm just not into adding it all into a website when I've already written it down in my book, kwim? But it is going to be handy to be on the right track now with the USDA to refer to.
