  • Blood work

I had my cholesterol checked last monday and I was hoping it was gonna be better since it's been borderline high for a few yrs. It's worse now then ever. The dr sent me a letter in the mail saying she wanted to check again in 3 months and that losing weight would help and to do the Medeteranian diet and to eat allot of high fiber foods. Now i don't know what to do. I have lost weight, I'm exercising and i thought I was doing the right thing. Now I'm scared this diet is clogging my arteries. So frustrating!

    Re: Blood work

It might be no problem at all. Let's see...

How long ago did you start Atkins?

You wrote your cholesterol is high... are you talking about total cholesterol?

Do you have the breakdown (HDL, LDL -- VLDL in particular, etc.)?

      Re: Blood work

im guessing you fell for the total cholestoral scam

YouTube - Exposing the Cholesterol Myth

      im copy paste this

here is how cholestoral somewhat works so you no longer get scamed by drug copanies

you know how they say LDL = BAD and HDL = GOOD well it does not work like that. you see you need LDL you would die with out it and your HDL recycles your LDL so if all LDL was bad why would your body recycle it?

now heres how it somewhat works there are different types of LDL and one type is a large healthy fluffy type which has no health risk and this is the type of LDL you want in your body but you see heres the problem when you get the useless total cholestoral test done it will combo all your bad types of LDL with your good large healthy fluffy type of LDL and if your LDL is too high the doctor will say your have bad cholestoral and tell you too change your diet and put you on meds

the common total cholestoral test is horrible. it tricks people all the time your cholestoral could be geting great while this test could say its got much worse you see why this common total cholestoal test is horrible?

here is an example of how its commonly abused on people lets say someone starts the atkins diet and instead of waiting the 6 months before geting a cholestoral test like they are supposed too they only wait 2-3 months well this is what happens they get a total cholestoral test done the test shows there LDL has spiked - gone through the roof then the doctor says there diet is bad and puts them on cholestoral lowering meds

the problem though is that spike in LDL was all from the good large healthy fluffly LDL that has no health risk so at that time they had large amounts of both good and bad LDL but im guessing because your HDL recycles all LDL it takes atleast 6 months for the body to naturally filter out the bad small dense LDL so mostly only good large healthy fluffly LDL is left

if the people had got a proper full panel cholestoral test done it would have clearly showed the spike in LDL was from the good LDL and that there cholestoral is geting much better. but sadly people fall for this horrible total cholestoral test scam

also saturated fat creates the large healthy fluffly LDL yes thats right saturated fat is good for you the whole saturated fat being bad for you has been a 100% lie.

my cholesterol is awful right now.... it was 316 total at last check... and hdl dangerously low......

I'm doing this... I feel better than I have in a long time... I'm slowly but surely losing... and so I'm not going to stress the number... yet...

when my cholesterol went to 273 once before.... it scared me and was one of the reasons I stopped doing this.... but I'm not letting it send me away this time...

          Re: Blood work

If you didn't wait for 6 months after starting Atkins, then yes, your cholesterol can go UP.

If you stick with Atkins, and retest in 6 months, your results should be better.

Keep in mind though, that if your cholesterol is based on heredity, diet and exercise alone may not be enough.

You haven't been on Atkins long enough for it to do anything good or bad, I wouldn't blame it for your #'s.

there your cholesterol is geting better your triglycerides whent down and the good large healthy fluffly LDL spiked but you got the total cholestoral test so it doesn't tell you that and your doctors assuming its the bad small dense LDL xD

the good large healthy fluffly LDL will not get stuck so your fine i see for alot of people there good LDL spikes when starting atkins

and make sure you don't take any cholesterol meds they are nasty stuff

and if you want to blow your doctor away stay on atkins and then get a full pannel cholesterol test 6 months down the road make sure that test shows all types of LDL and then tell your doctor your still on atkins xD

                  Re: Blood work

yep ask your doc for a breakout of your LDL by particle size. congrats on lowering your Triglycerides and shedding some body fat and getting moving on your exercise. in 3 months you should be looking even better.

also LDL goes up iniitally on any weight loss as the body responds to the cal deficeit you are greating. It should bounce back down soon.

also their are other medical conditions that can cause LDL to go up did your doc mention any of them?

                    Re: Blood work

Nope i just got a very vague letter. She sent me a similar one last summer when my iron (ferratin) levels were severely low and I could barely function. Was told in a letter to take some iron.

Oh and why are you saying my triglycerides are lower? They went up.

I had no idea you could break down a cholesterol test. I guess i should research that! It can be so confusing to me.
But it's so frustrating since i was just there a month ago and they saw i lost over 10lbs so telling me to "lose weight" makes me mad. She should see i am doing just that!

if the letter was from the recent bloodwork.. it says trigs 55.. from january.. it says 84... so they went down... if I'm reading it right

The 55 was January of "09" the 84 is from last week. So the 84 is higher.

She does send a letter to help save me money but a call from the nurse would have worked too. it would be nice to have someone go through it with me.

Oh so that change was from over a year and you've been on Atkins a month. Sorry but again you cant' blame Atkins. Did you tell your Dr. you were only on Atkins a month or did you say I'm on Atkins and she assumed you were following it the last year. That old of a blood panel is useless for comparison since you just started on plan. Go from this blood panel forward if you want an accurate comparison.

It's going to take time for your body to respond to the exercise, diet etc. You can't expect instant blood results. It didn't get bad over night and it won't get good over night.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be worried if you have bad cholesterol going up, of course you should. I'm just saying you need to look at the whole picture, this if over a years worth of bad eating that caused those #'s to increase, nothing recently done good or bad.
