  • Snacks: only twice a day?

    In New Atkins for a New You, I read that I should aim to eat three meals per day, with two snacks.

    Is it very important to only eat five times per day? Or can I "graze," as long as I follow the diet, and stay within my carbs, etc.?

    You can graze, as long as you eat fat or protein with your carbs in order to avoid blood sugar spikes. The number of meals/snacks is not mentioned in DANDR (the book we go by on this board) except to say not to go more than 6 waking hours without eating.

      Hi Julie,

      I was just looking at Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2003, updated edition), and one of the rules (the first one, in fact) says "Eat either three regular-size meals or four or five smaller meals." I wasn't sure how literally to take that

      I'll take your word for it, whatever you say, since it looks like you've achieved some amazing weight loss! Congrats!

        Hmmm, looks like it is time for me to re-read the book!

        I am not a grazer...I have had too many problems with snacking & eating when not hungry (before Atkins), so I generally eat 3 meals a day & have a small!! snack if very hungry between meals, but I am pretty sure that grazing is OK, I think other people on this board have had success eating more often/grazing.

          bragi---I think the crew here goes by the 2002 version. That might be the reason for the discrepancy between what you are reading and what JulieB is saying.

              Ok, I can't find the EXACT book that I have because it's probably a different print.....only it says 2002 and so does the one in this link:

                The 2002 hardcover is fine ... the printing may be 2003, but the copyright is 2002.

                  I'm not down with that action. I say eat when hungry and stop when satisfied. I wouldn't artificially force five mini meals per day unless you're truly hungry.
