  • Question about sweeteners....

I was just wondering why only 3 servings of sweeteners are allowed? I am not having any more than that but I was curious. I know the book says it too but what is the reason behind it, if anyone knows?

Is it the craving thing? I don't crave anything so I am unable to relate to that concept.

Also what about caffeine? I am not doing anything "illegal" I am just curious so please no criticism, thank you.

    Re: Question about sweeteners....

It's about "best practice". "The 'three serving' recommendation was based on the literature regarding safety of " moderate" daily intake of artificial sweeteners as being 'safe'. It is also based on the desire to avoid sacrificing vegetable intake on Induction because each packet needs to be counted as one gram and the Induction phase is most restrictive in carb consumption. It also is based on clinical observations on how to get sweet addictions under control. No hard core science behind the number '3' just best practices recommendations. The antioxidants and fiber in vegetables are a critical optimal health choice for lifestyle changes."

Dr. Atkins writes in the book that caffeine can mess up your blood sugar and trigger cravings.

        RE: limit sweeteners to 3

Dr. Atkins gives the reason in DANDR 1992. According to him, he noticed that some of his patients stalled or slowed their weight loss if they had 3 or more servings of sweetener per day. Once they reduced or eliminated the sweetener, their weight loss resumed.

Also in another of his books (I think it's Dr. ATkins Nutrition Breakthrough), he goes over the Atkins diet. And he states that his goal for all of us to to completely wean ourselves off sugary foods and to be satisfied with the naturally occuring sweetness in foods like fruits. So he limits our sweetener use in hopes that we will eventually stop using all things that add a sweet taste to foods and begin to appreciate the level of sweetness nature built into naturally sweet foods.

Most diet sodas = stall for me. Caffeine and aspartame combined not only make me feel crappy later, but they mean negative weight and inches lost results. My caffeine free, splenda sweetened cola, however, is a gift from the gods.
