  • Nitrates??????????

    I have been on induction for a month now and Im losing sooooooooooo much weight but i'm just wondering what is the deal with Nitrates. I only ask because I have found the holy grail of my diet journey, a 0 carb Smoked hotdog with nothing but 95% pork in it being sold in every supermarket (Mattisons original). It just tastes amazing and its so good for my working patterns. 1 problem....it has Nitrates, will eating alot of this slow down my weight loss ?? Thanks Georgie b x

    Well, hot dogs are very processed, and we should limit processed foods.

    What are the ingredients, exactly?

    " Nitrates and nitrites are added to meats (such as bacon and cured ham) and smoked fish to produce an appealing color and inhibit growth of germs and poisons. While these chemical compounds are not themselves carcinogens, they can yield byproducts such as nitrosamines, which have been implicated in higher rates of cancer--particularly colon and gastric cancer--in animals."

    That's why it's a good idea to limit your intake of foods containing nitrates or nitrites. You can find nitrate-free products in health food stores and some supermarkets but they are often very hard to find.

      According to their website
      Original Smoked Pork Sausage | Mattessons
      they contain
      Ingredients: pork (95%), water, seasoning.
      Seasoning: salt, citric acid, stabiliser (sodium polyphosphates), flavourings, preservative (sodium nitrite).
      Filled into non-UK beef protein casings.
      So probably not a whole lot of sodium nitrite as it is the last item listed among the ingredients of the seasoning.
      But according to the few nutrition facts shown they do have quite a lot of salt - 1200 mgs per 57 gram serving!

        I didnt think about the salt content. Thank you i think i will slow down on them.

        But they are so damn good

          Keep in mind this means that 5% is not pork!

          They could be a "once in a while" thing, certainly.
