  • Wow, can someone explain this weight gain?..

    Hi, I'm Rob. I'm new here. I'm 27, 6'2 and when I started atkins I weighed 285.

I've been on the diet for roughly three weeks now. The first couple days I dropped down to 280, which was nice. But slowly my weight crept back up to 285.

I've been pretty strict. I even gave up gum. I changed from coke zero to the occasional "Diet Rite" which is made with splenda and I still drink plenty of water.

I don't overeat or undereat, and I've been sticking to eggs, a variety of meats and vegetables like broccoli and at no time have I went above 20 carbs.

I attributed my inability to lose weight on the diet from not getting enough exercise so I vowed to start working out. I started hitting the treadmill and lifting some 100lb weights, nothing too harsh, just a few reps.

I stepped on the scales just two days after starting my simple workout regime and all of a sudden now I weigh 295. Is it even possible to put on 10 pounds of muscle from some simple weight lifting and walking?

Needless to say, I'm very frustrated in general that I haven't been losing weight and now that I'm exercising this happens. Can anyone explain? Perhaps atkins just isn't for me?

    Welcome to ADBB!

What's "plenty" of water exactly? How much Diet Rite exactly are you drinking?

    What's your variety of meats?

What other vegetables have you been eating and in what quantity?

How many net carbs do you get in a day?

Some people find that when starting Atkins measuring yourself can be more accurate than scales due to waterweight etc making your weight fluctuate.
10lbs in 2 days really doesn't make sense though, I've also found that I lost weight in the first 2 weeks and have put on a pound or 2 in the thrid week so maybe this is a tricky time to get through?

No it is not possible for that to be muscle, it doesn't develop that fast. It is possible since you weren't use to working out that your muscles are retaining a lot of water because they are stressed. Increase your water intake and see if that helps, also make sure your sodium isn't getting too high with the foods you eat. If that doesnt' work see your Dr. and make sure nothing is wrong causing the drastic increase in fluid.

Good for you for eating well and starting exercise!!!!

Whenever I start working out again (had to take a break due to an injury) I gain a few pounds or stall for a couple weeks. This just happened to me recently. I even gained some inches this last time (likely due to retaining water). But a couple weeks later, while keeping up the exercise, I began losing again, both lbs and inches. I thought I was doing light weights and cardio as well and it still happened. I think it's because while we might think the exercise is light, but the body might have other ideas and will retain water because of the change (holy cow, what did you just do to me??? Better hold onto water until I figure this out!).

It could also be a combination of increasing exercise and something you are eating, so it might not hurt to post a menu for review just in case.

I also second the above of measuring. Many times, you will be losing inches instead of pounds.

It sounds like you are retaining water. Are you weighing yourself the same time everyday?

I suggest first thing after you wake up, after you pee and naked.

I would cut the Diet Rite to every other day and drink a minimum of 125 oz a day for your size.

I once retained 7 lbs water a month after I started and actually ended up weighing more than what I started. It took about 2 weeks to see the scale move and eventually lose again.

Rob, you and I are similar in size and pre-Atkins weight. I started Atkins-like diet Oct. 17, 2009 (now on day 177); about to turn 60; 6'6"; 301\236\225

Before you start Atkins, you might want to read this thread:

Re: Wow, can someone explain this weight gain?..

Hi guys, just checking in. I think I've decided it was the diet rite that did it because yesterday I didn't drink any ALL DAY and then had one that night and it made me feel sort of funny.. more like, bad. So I'm going back to nothing but water to see how that works out.

I remember reading somewhere that the "sweet taste" of something in your mouth can have all sorts of effects, regardless of carb count because your brain registers it a certain way and releases insulin... or.. something to that extent. I forget the details.

Some of you asked about a typical day's menu.. Hmm, let's see, today I had some chicken and green beans and I just made some beef and broccoli soup that was pretty good. Nothing out of the ordinary..

One question: Are very low carb items allowed on induction even if they have sugar? What I mean is, if I eat salad can I eat ranch dressing with it? (It has 1 or 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons or something like that.) If not, what sort of dressing can I use?

PS: Sorry I didn't check back sooner! Franky I was surprised to see that so many people posted a response to what I had originally said so quickly. You guys are awesome.

Most of us eat Ranch with no issues. Try to find one with 2 carbs or less per serving (usually 2 tbsp). I use Hidden valley ranch bacon, it has 1 carb per serving. I also use newmans own oil and vinegar when I want a change, no sugar in it.

added sugar is not allowed for induction when you look at a ranch dressing and its ingridients say sugar then its not allowed but if sugar is not on the ingridients list and all the ingridients are legal then its ok

cheese has a little tiny bit of lactose sugars and thats why its limmited and it stalls me if i eat it with more than 1 meal per day

whipping cream has quite alot of lactose sugars and its very limmited i can't eat any though im allergic to it

i can never find a good ranch dressing they all got either soy lecithin, soy and or canola oil in them

heres the horrors with soy lecithin and soy
