  • P90X and Atkins

I started P90X this past Sunday. I am reading all of the information about high carb recovery drinks and was wondering if anyone else had experience with doing P90X and staying on plan. Right now I am in OWL Phase 3. I just added nuts on Sunday, the day I started P90X. I am not much of a dairy person, so I have not added that in just yet.

My option for recovery has been to drink a protein shake (Isopure Zero Carb) and add a tablespoon of Glutamine powder. I was hoping for ideas on how to get the most out of my eating and exercising.

I forgot to mention, I make the shake with the protein powder, water, and ice plus the glutamine. Maybe I should use my daily allowance of heavy cream for this?

    Thanks.
    Carrie

I'm considering starting p90x but I worry I'm too fat for it frankly I'm on induction so my only recovery is actual induction-legal food. How are you finding it so far?

      Re: P90X and Atkins

I have not tried it but over the years I have been there members have talked about it and done it sticking with the plan. On Atkins we get our glucose needs from protein and we need to keep fueling with protein so you should be fine with what you do. When I do protein shakes I do add some cream because I need a bit of fat in it or it is gives me a bit of buzz - likely from the sweetener combined with the lean protein.

I think you are quite brave for doing this one. It is hard. I love to hear more about it. Maybe I will order it one day and try it.

          Re: P90X and Atkins

I have done the entire p90x program. You don't need the recovery drink to get it done. That is more marketing than science if you ask me........You will feel more tired than the average person, but remember that most people have about 20 minutes of burning pure glycogen out of their muslces before they start burning fat. On Atkins you are burning fat immeditely and that will result in much more producitve losses and gains. Don't worry about those muslce heads that say you can't build muscles without carbs......the lack of breathing during reps has made them loopy. Good luck and let me just say that Yoga X was the hardest one of all! My favorite was Kenpo X.......

The program is fantastic and it provides a great variety to working out. IT IS INTENSE though and I am glad to see someone in here that is trying it. I stopped because of a broken shoulder in basketball, but I will be starting up again when that heals.

I just wanted to pipe in and say that I was a telephone operator taking orders for infomercial products. I was one of the top P90x sellers - nationally, for about a year. I've been on conference calls with Beachbody reps and trainers.

            The recovery formula isn't necessary.

For those of you who aren't sure you can handle P90x, try Tony Horton's Ten Minute Trainer first.

No!!!! Don't tell them that! I want them to have trouble getting off the toilet like I did my second day or having trouble just rolling over in bed. The pain was wonderful

I started P90x last week. That first week was ****. I thought plyo was going to kill me. The yoga was also a surprise work out as I don't think I have sweat that much in a long time. I am on day 10 and while I am still sore, I feel great. I think I replace plyo with cardiox next week. That one kills me and all the jumping makes my downstairs neighbors angry.

Resistance bands are your friend for the pull ups. I got a set of generic bands on ebay for 25 bucks and they work fantastic. They show alternate methods for almost every exercise out there, including using chairs to help with pull ups.

That first day is going to destroy you. Tons of pull ups and even more push ups. Just find your motivation and keep at it.

                          Re: P90X and Atkins

I actually found the first day was not that bad. My shoulders were a little tense and a few muscles were tender. Yesterday (Day 2 -Plyometrics) was murder. I am not in great shape and I 'modify, modify' when needed as Tony says to do. Do as much as you can safely and set a goal to do more the next time you do that routine. My legs are sore today from Plyo, but not so sore I can't move. I keep telling myself that this is the means to the end...or rather the means to a more fit lifetime for me. It helps to have a partner to push you as well.

The resistance bands are really good. I am also going to suggest some lighter dumbells for some of the exercises. We set up an area in our basement and mounted a pull up bar to the rafters. We also mounted clasps on a hook and run the bands through that for the modified pull up rountines (using bands instead of the bar). Great idea, if I have to say so myself, but I want an extra set of bands so I don't have to take the ones mounted to the ceiling down when I need them on the floor. Oh and another tip....get a yoga mat, a thick one for the ab ripper videos and the yoga stuff. Anyone who wants to follow my personal progress can look me up on facebook. Just send me a message on here and I will send you a link to my page so you can add me as a friend.

Now I am off to do the next routine which is shoulders and arms...jeez I thought that is what I did first (or at least it felt like it was shoulders and arms when it was really chest & back). I do have to say that if I am not in much better shape in 90 days it is my own fault.

From the manufacture the ingredients are:

Ion Exchange Whey Protein Isolate,Vitamin/Mineral/Amino Acid Blend (Taurine,Potassium [as Potassium Chloride],Chloride [as Potassium and Sodium Chloride],Calcium [as Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate],Phosphorus [as Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate],L-Glutamine,Magnesium [as Magnesium Oxide],Vitamin E [as Dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate],Niacin,Zinc [as Zinc Sulfate Dihydrate],Vitamin A [as Palmitate],Pantothenic Acid [as D-Calcium Pantothenate],Vitamin B6 [as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride]. Copper [as Amino Acid Chelate],Manganese [as Manganese Sulfate Dihydrate],Riboflavin,Thiamin [as Thiamin Hydrochloride],Folic Acid,Biotin,Iodine [as Potassium Iodide],Chromium [as Amino Acid Chelate],Molybdenum [as Amino Acid Chelate],Selenium [as Amino Acid Chelate],Vitamin B12),Malic Acid,Citric Acid,Natural Flavor,Sucralose,FD&C Red 40

I don't see Soy Lecithin in the list unless it is disguised as something else. From what I read it is in alot of products and we never know about it, but isn't necessarily offensive to Atkins.

Amended: I looked at the different flavors of the Zero Carb and Low Carb and it is listed as an ingredient in some of the flavors but not all of them.
