    Re: P90X and Atkins

I am in the 5th week of P90X. I am no where near in shape, in fact according to my BMI I am morbidly obese. I can make it through all of the programs, yes I modify and on PlyoX I do half time. Read through the manual first to understand the exercises, sometimes there is not much explanation of what you are doing before all the video people start. I have lost 20lbs since I started P90X and I am feeling great! My favorite video is Shoulders and Arms, least favorite is CardioX.

One more thing... I have not used any recovery drinks, just kept eating according to plan (I am on OWL1) and I have been fine.

Good point! P90X was orginally designed for the atheltic type and that is why Tony always stresses doing what you can do. I noticed a fantastic difference in 30, 60 and 90 days, but I had a friend who was really overweight and out of shape and he just noticed a slight change, because he had to modify so much. I was a college football player and these routines are right up my alley. It really helps if you uinderstand the mechanics of lifting, proper technique and what your limits are. Toom many times I have seen people get hurt when they start a program like this, also used to be a personal trainer, because they did not have proper technique and they did not listen to their body very well. Get a heart rate monitor for SURE to know when you are in the zone and listen to your body. If it is uncomfortable, it is ok, if it hurts, that is not ok.

I think I am going to start with Power 90 first. That seems to be the suggestion of a lot of people who couldn't get as much out of P90x due to weight. I have both, so it's not a big deal.

          Re: P90X and Atkins

Last night was arms and shoulders for me which I think has been the easiest yet. One thing I learned is that the bands are really good for some of the exercises and others it just makes more sense to use dumbells. I am going to pick some up this weekend.

The only thing that hurts on me today is just above my knees and I really feel it when I squat down to the toilet...I hold my breath. This lets me know that I am working muscles that need it though. Tonight is Yoga X. I am ready for it!

I did add my 3 ounces of cream to my protein shake yesterday and it was yummy. I haven't lost anything else this week but think my body always retains water when I really start working out. I am going to keep at it and stay on plan!!

My husband ordered this and we just got it in the mail but I seriously doubt I will be able to do it! I guess I will just look silly and try and follow along! lol Some excerise will be better than none. But really, I don't think I will be able to keep up at all, walking a mile wears me out much less high intensity excercise! My recovery drink will be lots of water!

              Callog,

Everytime that you pop in a video just have a goal to do one or two more reps than you did last time. If you don't make it through the whole video then your goal is to do 5, 10, or 15 minutes more the next week. I just did Yoga X last night and love it. It is an hour and a half but worth every minute. My body feels lose today, not all tight, tense muscles.

Tonight is legs and back, I am looking forward to it!

ten min trainer is overkill......all you really need is 3 minutes........jk! That is a good one to start on.

                    Re: P90X and Atkins

OK, forgive me as a I play devil's advocate on this subject for a second.

First off, kudos to ANYONE who puts forth their best effort on a program like P90X. If you can follow this program consistently, and give it your best effort each and every time you pop in a DVD, you should have no problem reaching your goals.

My problem with the P90X program (and others like it) is that while I believe in the results it is capable of, I just don't see the "average" person (i.e. people like me) waking up and deciding to do P90X for life. I'm sure those people do exist. But for most of us, I think we look at this program much the same way we look at Atkin's -- a means to an end. People get wrapped up in the results they see on the infomercial, but don't realize that you must continue the program to maintain those results.

Just like my goal on Atkins this time around is 220 instead of 180, a result I think I can realistically maintain once achieved, I think I will choose a workout routine that I can continue for the long haul. I tried P90X, but have no intention of working out 1 hour a day, 6 days a week, every day for the rest of my life.

Again, kudos to those who succeed. I bow down to you and honor your commitment. As for me, C25K and mountain biking remain my buddies. Now back to your regularly scheduled program...

LateNite you're wrong.....take it back! No, you are kinda right.....P90X is meant to be more of a bootcamp to extreme results in a very short period of time. Perfect for the 90 days before spring break or your wedding! Of course you need to maintain the results, but to get this sort of foundation in 90 days is remarkable. It is very much like a crash diet, but if you want the results quickly, it is one of the best.

So as you can see from my well thought out rebuttal......you are an idiot (P.s. LateNite and I are very familiar with each other so please don't hit the panic button at the top right of this post)

My P90X is joining as many exercise challenges as I can handle on the boards. There's this real life thing that I have going on right now, and it's really getting in the way of my starting an exercise routine like P90X. Playing squash, soccer, tennis, lifting weights, and running are enough for me. I don't want to get ripped anyways. Although, I wouldn't mind having a six pack again. Maybe if I join the abs challenge every month for the next 90 days..... lol.

All of those things mentioned are great Furley! Who wants hard rock abs anyways? A little flesh is nice to grab on to!

To each his own, for me...I am about strict guidelines, one little bump off course can cause a diluge...so P90X is stringent for me. You don't have to do it for the rest of your life if your goal is to get in better shape quickly. You can maintain some of the results doing other things. My reason for starting it is so that I can hike longer, better, and farther. Once I feel comfortable in my own skin I will take the parts of P90X that I really feel work for me and incorporate them into my other activites.
