Don't be afraid to politely make corrections when media gets it wrong. People still want to hold onto the idea that Atkins = mayonnaise and bacon and your bellybutton. It's time to really continue to disavow those notions, especially with the latest release of the Atkins book currently available.
The author in this article says re:Atkins:
If cutting out fruits and vegetables has you shouting “hallelujah!” then you can start rejoicing.
I responded (and they published, to their credit):
Did you know that fruits and vegetables are not only allowed on Atkins but encouraged?
In induction alone, Atkins meets or exceeds USDA recommendations for vegetables. That's more than I see the general public consuming on a regular basis--and Atkins mandates vegetables.
And he mandates them...in the first two weeks. Ever since 1972.
Fruits come in the form of tomatoes and avocados, zucchini, cucumbers and olives in those first two weeks as well. Wait an extra week, and Atkins followers are now exceeding the USDA Food Pyramid with now 8 servings of vegetables per day.
Eight!
Berries and other low glycemic fruits come quickly enough, within two-three more weeks. Within a month, most Atkins followers are eating a grand total of nine servings (per the USDA) of low glycemic fruits and vegetables.
Atkins is certainly not the anti vegetablefruitpalooza the media is making it out to be.
Please. Pick up his books. Read. Rinse. Repeat. THEN report.
Don't be afraid to make a polite, informed response when you feel moved to do so.
