  • Question - please give feedback

So, I am just starting induction and I was wondering what is a good goal for weight loss during this phase?

I have a total of 57 lbs to lose and I have a tentative induction goal of 30lbs.

    Is this realistic?

Your goal is to lose 30 lbs in the 14 day induction? is that what you were saying? If it is you have you consider a lot of variables, your age, your metabolism, how well you follow the book. I think your goal for induction should be to learn to run it clean, avoid cravings, get your introduced to the gym ( if you are not doing it yet) and maybe get a goal of 10 -15 lbs for induction. I would hate for you to get your homes in such a high goal then fail and quit. You say you want to lose 57 lbs..is that for goal? I lost 50 lbs in almost a few months...Good luck to you

I started atkins in late november but every other week just sort of fell off the wagon and was not working out..late december I started to really follow it and added the gym from november to december I only lost like 7 lbs not following it right..from december to march 18 I lost 50 lbs give or take depending what mood my scale is on lol.

It's best to set no goals that have a deadline.

Some people lose a lot of weight during Induction, some don't. Some people lose nothing, but then they move to OWL and finally reach goal.

No, it isn't realistic to lose that much in two weeks of Induction.

Re: Question - please give feedback

As the others have said, you cannot really set a goal for how much weight you will to lose on induction, as your body will make that decision for you
And if you do not get to that goal what happens then?

Far better to set goals for induction that you can achieve by your own choices!
        Like
Eat only on plan for the first 14 days
Drink xx ounces of water a day
Exercise for xx minutes x times a week

One way some people approach goal weights is to set themselves mini-goals for maybe 5 pounds at a time with no time limits and celebrate those milestones with a special treat or pampering for yourself - like a new lipstick, or new CD, or a trip to the hairdresser - something that will make you feel good about your achievements.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I realize that I will not lose that much in two weeks of induction - what I meant is - is it realistic to stay on induction until I lose 30 lbs?

            No.

Induction isn't about losing ... it's about getting your body ready to lose.

Losing happens in OWL ... Ongoing Weight Loss.

Thanks atkinsgal - that is what I needed to know. I have only read 12 chapters of the book - I will probably learn that as I read them over the next two weeks while I am getting through induction.

Re: Question - please give feedback

Dr. Atkins indicates in DANDR02 that an Induction period of two weeks is a place to start to get your body chemistry lined up for returning yourself to good health. He does, in fact, say that should you choose to continue Induction for a longer period it is neither unhealthy or unrealistic. Two weeks is a beginning. When you decide to move into OWL is a decision that is up to you based on how much you have to loose, how it effects your well being and how well you handle Induction. (That was all paraphrased by me)

30 pounds in 2 weeks is not realistic. I agree there are more important goals during your "visit" to Induction, But the Atkins Plan is not fixed to the two week Induction period either. Your greatest goal in Induction is to free yourself of the cravings and begin moving your metabolism towards feeling better. Hopefully, a begin to weight loss will accompany the Induction WOE.

The greatest advantages to going to OWL should be an increase in options in your acceptable food list (so you don't get bored) and a step by step progression toward your goals and achieving a diet (diet as in what you eat, bad or good, what you eat constitutes your "diet") in maintenance that you can enjoy for the rest of your hopefully healthy lie.

Either way, get started on Induction today, follow the plan as closely as you can to the letter and decide what you are going to do after the first two weeks of Induction, when you finish the two weeks on Induction!

Good Luck! Let us know how you are doing along the way.

You didn't move to OWL when you had 27 lbs left to lose though.

In retrospect, how did that work out? Do you think you overstayed your welcome on Induction? Do you think that might have anything to do with any current problems you're having?

To tell you the honest truth I do not know..I stayed in induction because I felt better there and motivated.not sure if staying there for long helped or not with my falling off the wagon, mostly I was sick at home with the flu and just did not have the power to cook my own stuff so I just ate what it was cooked by the household sheer lazyness and stress from the divorce plus sickness, but I think what brought me down was the ability to make all the excuses I just wrote down on why I fell off lol.

Re: Question - please give feedback

I stayed on Induction for a month. The first week I lost 2 pounds, which was discouraging, but week 2 I lost 7. I wanted to lose 20 pounds of the 60 I needed to lose before moving to OWL. I was not getting much exercise at first, due to an arthritic ankle, which was of course aggravated by the extra weight.
At 20 pounds gone, I could exercise without hurting my ankle. At that point, I began to walk every day, and bumped up to OWL. I lost 1-2 lbs a week after that.

Everyone is different. It's best to move to OWL as soon as you can, after the 2 weeks of Induction. But some of us are very slow losers.
