  • Which food(s) caused the craving???

Sorry for the long-winded post... warning in advance....

I have been on Atkins over a year and STILL not sure what is causing cravings. I use alot of spices and onions when cooking almost daily. I mix my meat and veggies when cooking, except salads. I use no prepackaged anything! I have not had any cravings really for over a week and was thinking this may just be it... Then I fixed Shrimp salad...

Shrimp ( raw and I cooked myself )
    mayonnaise
a little bit of cut up onion (1/8 of a medium one)
1 stalk of celery cut up
    black pepper

Mixed all together and ate with some cream cheese....

Now, to be honest I had tasted it without the cream cheese and "felt" that "I must eat myself another bite, that was good" feeling, but since I was planning to eat, didn't really examine it to closely until now that I'm about to eat out myself out of house and home.

I'm not sure what is causing my cravings, but for sure 100% it is chemical and not sure emotional like I usually think it is. I am emotionally great for a change and have been reading some books to self help myself with that... I literally Felt it when eating and still feel it... Not in my head!!!

How do I start at the beginning? Really I feel I need to eat Meat, olive oil/butter, and of course I know veggies, but I'm not sure which ones. (In some how ashammed to admit, but honest is honest.. over the past 1.5 week I have had almost NO Vegetables and felt so much more control over my cravings (even if I chose to eat an off plan food, it wasn't like I felt I needed the whole gallon of ice cream like before)...

    So to conclude:
Which of the items caused the craving... onion, celery, mayonnaise, shrimp, or black pepper?

Next How do I do a total food evaulation to see what foods I'm sensitive too? Can I eat 3 cups of the same veggies or say 15 net carbs from the same veggie day after day to see? I really need some major help.
    ~Amanda

Well - it could be any of the ingredients or a combination of two or more of them causing the problems.
The only way to start to find out would be to try the same dish with one ingredient missing and see what happens. You might need to try several variations before you find out (if you do find out) what is causing the cravings.
Also different mayonnaises have differing ingredients too, so you might need to try some varieties of that.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Do you have a shellfish, egg or soy allergy?

      To test:

      1. Try making the same recipe in a day, only this time nix the mayonnaise to test for egg and soy. See how you feel for the next 4-8 hours.

      2. The following day, try the recipe with tuna instead of shrimp and use the mayonnaise. See how you feel for the next 4-8 hours.

Between those two variables, you should be able to nab the culprit.

Note: Too much onion makes me hungry, so it could be the onion, too. You might take a third day and nix the onion and see if you notice a difference.

Thanks for the help... It just bothers me that I see so many people succeed, I believe in this WOE 150%!!! and I still can't get past these little #)(%&*($&%U ... I'm sure my body loves when I eat this way and so do I. It is just so annoying to not get my combinations right. Sigh...

Thanks again though. I will have to wait a day or 2 maybe... the "feeling" of craving still hasn't left my system.

If you haven't eaten veggies, could your body be craving veggies? Maybe, because all your body knows is a sugar craving, your brain thinks you want sugar when, actually, all it wants is veggies!! Are you drinking enough water? Veggies are made up with a lot of water (did I say that right?) and if you aren't getting veggies your body is getting less water than it's used to, not to mention all the vitamins and minerals in veggies.

Sorry, I must have not worded it correctly... I ment which veggies from the list have a tendency to cause cravings or unstable blood sugar in some people.

              Thanks.

It really is a 'YMMV' (your mileage may vary) thing, as we all have different reactions to different foods.

I know some members have had problems with celery and I think I remember someone who could not eat aubergines (eggplant) in the same dish as tomatoes.

I'm not sure, but my guess would be the onion, since they actually have sugars in them. Sweetness in onions is caused by the sugars glucose, fructose and sucrose. These three sugars vary in their sweetness, but all are sugars.
