  • sugar in spices, do i have to worry to much about it

Hi everyone, I have one question today. Does the sugar content in spices affect blood sugar level? I use lots of spices in my food and I am just wondering if it might affect my weight loss. I have tried to find spices with out sugar but with no success. I would like to hear what everyone thinks about it.

    Thanks

Yes sugar needs to taken into account. Try and find some that are zero or less sugary and count the carbs!!!!!! Remember the daily carb limit is only 20 and most of those have to be net veggies.

Thanks liv. Like the mayo i have says 3.7 g carb per 100g of mayo. I just eat max 3 tablespoons per day. I am hoping it won't be too bad. On the spices there is no carb specification so I guess i just leave them out and rely on salt and pepper for the time being.

Well mayo is not a spice. But it is yummy Mayo contain eggs that has natural carbs and the company usually add this or that. 3.7 carb for hundred gram sounds exceptable for mayo as long as it is the full fat stuff.

I'm not sure where you are, but the spice mix that I've found around here that is sugar-free is Mrs. Dash! Bonus that it is also salt-free (its claim to fame). Otherwise, plain old herbs/spices (not mixes) usually don't have sugar added. You could make your own mixes. Try googling for recipes for mixes ("recipe cajun seasoning", etc).

Remember that herbs/spices do have carbs, as Liv has said. I believe (I don't have my book in front of me) that Dr. Atkins said in DANDR to count each tablespoon as one carb (assuming you can't find a more accurate method).

          Best wishes,

Re: sugar in spices, do i have to worry to much about it

Thanks a lot liv and JulieB. I am from the UK but currently living in Germany. I don't speak the language so it is hard for me to find specific things I want for the Atkins. Reading labels is a nightmare. I have to buy and bring the items home so that I can translate and see what they contain. I have to throw a lot things the last couple of days. Major problem, i couldn't find multivitamin and mineral with out Iron so i am starting to worry for my health even if it just have been four days since i am on Atkins.

Here's a list of carbs in spices:

If you're not buying a spice blend, there shouldn't be any sugar in them.

What brand of mayonnaise are you using?

The mayo i use says De Rit organic, I bought it from one of nature food stores in Germany, by just looking the carb content.

Re: sugar in spices, do i have to worry to much about it

It seems fairly high in carbs - probably from the wheat syrup in it! Is it a 'lowfat' product? They are always higher in carbs than the fullfat versions.

In UK Hellman's fullfat mayo has only 1.5 carbs per 100 grams

I imagine it is super-tough shopping & reading labels when you don't speak the language!

Perhaps for spices, you could find some with only one ingredient...say you want oregano - doesn't matter what the word is for oregano - if there is only one ingredient...it will be oregano

Do you have a smart phone? I use mine when grocery shopping...

I have a list I found on these boards of all the different words used for sugar...maybe you could translate it into German, print it & bring it with you shopping.

Thank you all and sorry for the late reply. I got some advice from ADBB member who lives in Germany and I just bought a very low carb mayo.
