  • How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

My General Practitioner and my Endocrinologist appeared opposed to the Atkins WOE. THe last time I saw my GP I had blood work done and I'm moving in the right direction and in the right way. He told me to keep doing whatever it was I was doing.

I kind of felt like he was talking about my WOE like he couldn't actually bring himself to say Atkins or low carb, but that he couldn't argue with success.

The Endo has me scheduled for June, we shall see!

Maybe, if we spend enough time shoving our successes in their faces (nicely, of course) they will have to come around to face reality.

My rheumatologist endorses it, because sugar can aggravate joint pain. The endo is neutral.

my doc was just impressed that i was losing weight.
when she asked me i told her i wasn't eating anything processed and ate lots of veggies. lol.

i'd rather not label it with my doc as she's pretty old school.

Mine told me flat out that to loose weight, a person had to eat less than 20 grams of carbs a day. That's way back when Atkins was still in the medical journals and not book form yet.

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

I have yet to talk to my doctor (I'm working on Day 5 of Induction) but I made the mistake of talking about it with a local health store owner.

She told me it wasn't healthy, but then again she hasn't read the book OR seen the wonderful results and increased energy and sharp mind as everyone else. I plan on making a visit with my doctor, but I am doing Atkins for me.

I believe it is working and I'd rather not talk politics about it with others. Just as someone stated early, if people start asking me how I am starting to *look SO good* I am going to state a simple statement ... no label!

Also, the health store owner said that "Atkins will increase the blemishes on your face." She is completely wrong! MY skin has shown nothing BUT improvement once cutting out all of those nasty starches and sugars

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

My doctors are just so thrilled that I'm losing weight that not much is said about how I'm doing it. When I do mention Atkins, I have the below printout ready to hand to them as I say, "What is wrong with exercising and eating these foods?" before that scowl gets too firmly pasted on their faces.

I have this in a Word doc; it is basically the OWL ladder with the Atkins WOL key points in the beginning. I don't bother to explain Induction or the OWL rungs unless they are interested. They may be interested but don't have the time for chatting. Anyways, when they get a look at this, it does stop them in their tracks with any "only bacon & meat" BS.

            Atkins Diet
            • Focus on whole, unprocessed foods.
            • Limit artificial sweeteners to 3/day. NO sugar of any kind.
            • Drink a minimum of 64 oz. water/day.
            • Exercise in non-negotiable!

            Vegetables
12—15g net carbs of leafy greens and other non-starchy vegetables.

            Protein
All fish, all fowl, all shellfish, all meat, all eggs. Limit processed meats.

            Fats

Absolutely! I find it prints out better if you cut and paste it into a Word document and then do any formatting/resizing to make it pretty. I find showing it works every time!

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

Over the years, a few of them looked questioning when I mentioned the word "Atkins." Then once I told them the foods one eats - and eschews - on Atkins, they were all for it. Something to keep in mind.

Since low-carb has become so mainstream, it doesn't surprise a new M.D. when I tell them that this is the way I keep fit and my LDL & triglycerides down. Also, the longer you stay at your goal, the less skepticism you're going to get from anyone - not just your doctor.

First sheila, you look amazing...well my regular doctor, made a comment about me being on Atkins, as my last blood test, should something high in my kidney test...he said it could be because of the diet I am on..My Endo...had no problem with me being on Atkins.. he said if its helping me and I am losing weight.. then continue...as long as the weight is coming off and my tests are ok.., he was thrilled....so I only have to worry about the kidney thing which will be checked next month..

When I told my doctor I was doing low-carb, I was a bit sheepish about it. My doctor is fairly young and I won't say she was super-positive about it, but her reaction wasn't negative. She said something along the lines of having other patients who lost weight this way.

I'd like to think that the younger doctors and others in the medical field will have a more open-mind, i.e., that schools are doing a better job these days of teaching the benefits of a low-carb WOE, but I just got into an online argument with a youngish registered dietician the other day who tried to tell me that Atkins would kill her diabetic patients. She also thought ketones were bad. I explained the difference between ketones and ketoacidosis but she didn't believe me. Double .

Because I never really needed to see my doctor for many years it was only when I had lost most of my excess weight that he realised I had lost by following Atkins.
I expected some daft comment but I got the thumbs-up from him and a question as to whether I would be willing to talk to some of his other patients about how well Atkins had worked for me.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Well, my doctor thought it was great to start ANY diet, but she did say to modify Atkins and have at least 30-40% grains in my diet (!!!???!!!). When i told her that he first two weeks really cannot accomadate grains of any kind, she said that being strict and having about 20% grains for 2 weeks , only, would probably be okay, but then bump up the grains after. Well i have a degree in Nursing and i can honestly say that i thoroughly understand the biochemistry, physiology etc explained in DANDR and needless to say i smiled, thanked her for her 'creative' ideas and strolled out to follw the late, great, Dr Atkins' instructions, and we discuss continued weight loss, but not the methods used, it's just not worth my time and energy to teach her a thing or two about physiology...it would frustrate our relationship and sabotage my successes.

My bloodwork has improved DRAMATICALLY, within weeks of starting up again, and my energy level rocks when i stick to the plan, this is what count IMHO!

My doctor said, looking at my weight loss results, improved numbers, etc. "Whatever you're doing, just keep doing it."

My endocrinologist said, "It's about finding what works for you. Low carb often works better for thyroid and insulin resistance."

My nutritionist would like me to eat more fiber and carbs, but after I tried it her way last year for 3 months and couldn't make that work, I went back to Atkins and have proven to her my way works and she's all for whatever works for me as long as I'm eating enough veggies and other nutrients. She's delighted since so few of her patients actually do successfully lose weight and stick to a diet.
