Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

Our Dr. supports Atkins and loves the results we were seeing. But I got pulled off because my bp bottomed out (80's/50's) and we couldn't get it to come up even though I was off meds. Since this WOE naturally lowers bp they finally decided for my health it was best to discontinue. I also started swelling extremely bad, 10lbs in a week. Which I'm still working on getting that under control getting ready to under go kidney testing if this med doesn't work.

Anyways DH is still on Atkins and has the Dr. full support since his #'s are great. I still support Atkins 100% but have come to realize not everyone can do it. I'm hoping I can start back on plan later after everything gets figured out. If not I'll continue to lose, just not on Atkins but will support DH in his WOE completely and drool over all the good steak he gets to eat LOL

Poobears..Regardless of Atkins... I hope everything is going to be ok....I have a kidney thing going on as well..and my lower BP number is now at 69, the doctor told right now that its good but he is suprised that even with my weight as high as it is.. that he didnt expect it to be so low... you I am kind of happy about that...I wish you well..Bizzle my endo said that the same exact thing as yours did and my husband's nutritionist thumbed her nose down at me when I told her I was on this WOL.. LOL I said it loud and clear too!!!!

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

Be careful with that BP. If mine gets in the low 60's or in the 50's I start blacking out. Also not good for your eyes etc if it gets too low. I've had 3 days of lower end of normal readings so I think it's finally stabalizing. Still have dips but the majority of the time I think it's staying where it should be. Good news is now that I have my bp up I feel good enough to exercise so I'm on the second week of doing the weightloss program on my treadmill. YAY!

Dh passed his 50lbs lost on Atkins mark recenty and was taken off his bp meds too so we are both feeling pretty good on our journey to goal.

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

So poohbear, you mentioned you were on bp meds? What was your bp before Atkins? I am asking due to the fact that I have pretty high blood pressure and take 25g atenolol to get it down to around 90/135 (usually 100/150). Does your doctor have any indication as to why your blood pressure dropped so much? When did you get off the blood pressure pills? I am sure you already know this, but stay away from natural diuretics like celery which can lower blood pressure.

I hope that this rectifies soon and you can be nice and healthy again. May I ask...what is your WOE at the moment?

Poobears congrats to your husband!! Mine has issues, bp and sugar issues... but he refuses to do Atkins, although he loved the low carb lasagne I made last night...I am going to the doctors next month for my kidney, so I will definitely discuss my bp with him....I hope you get back to Atkins soon... and congrats on the treadmill...I tried some of my programs and just about fainted!!

Just out of curiousity, it seems a lot of people have kidney issues. What is the normal cause for this ...? Not enough water? I'm just curious BC I don't want it to happen to me ... I'm on Day 8 of Induction ... Things are going pretty well. Still have a headache on and off though :/

My problem came with the blood work..when he looked at the results in regards to the kidneys..he said the level was high....so right now he has me drinking sugar free cranberry juice every day.. I am hoping its nothing but an infection.. whatever it is I do not think it came from Atkins...I just hadn't had blood work done in a zillion years as I am not a doctor goer...I got so freaked out I asked him if I was going to die.. its why I do not go to doctors...

I don't think there are a lot of people with kidney 'issues' here - just that people who do not like the Atkins WOE always claim it affects the kidneys so the topic is often brought up.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

At this point I don't even know if I have kidney issues causing the swelling that is just where they'll look for answers first. If so I don't blame Atkins for it, I've had swelling problems since my teen years when I was an itty bitty skinny thing just not this severe. 10lbs in a week was a new one for me. Definitely not a water issue I drink more than my weight in water everyday I am a wateraholic and have been for years LOL

The only problem I had with Atkins was the low bp issue but for most that is a good thing, not a bad thing. Like I mentioned DH is still on plan and has our Drs full support. I will still recommend it 100%.

Re: How's Your Dr. Feel about your "plan"?

I deal with 2 sets of doctors....

I'm office manager (and all-around worker ) at a primary care office. My bosses are very accepting of low carb. In fact, it was one of my bosses who urged me to go on a low carb diet in the first place. And when any of their patients come in and admit they are on a low carb diet, they think it's great. They're really into eating natural foods---natural oils, minimally processed foods, etc.--because they think that the toxins of preservatives and additives harm our bodies more than help them.

If they weren't my bosses, I would go to them for my medical care, but I just don't feel comfortable with that. So I go to another doctor. Frankly, I have never bounced into his office and said "I'm on Atkins!". When I started my weight loss, I told him I'm planning on losing weight by cutting out sugary foods, eating more veg, eating less processed foods and exercising. He was very happy and didn't pry into exactly what I was eating, etc. I did tell him I was going to take a multivitamin and fish oil supplements. So he did my bloodwork and I went for follow-ups. And that's it. As far as he knows, I'm his patient who lost weight by exercise and eating healthier.

forbey, I'm surprized that your endocrinologist doesn't approve of low carb. All the endo groups here try to put their patients on a "controlled carb diet". Even one of the hospitals here has a controlled carb diet for all their adult patients, that's divided into the total number of carbs one can eat daily.

I was surprised as well. How does an endocrinologist not understand that drastically reducing carb intake has to be better for the body than eating carbs and super dosing the insulin to correct the imbalance.

I am equally appalled by the American Diabetes Association's "recommended" diet.

But hey, I'm just the diabetic guy who is slowly dying of carbohydrate poisening, what would I know!

(That being said, both the PCP and the ENDO were happy to see the new bloodwork and tha latest weeks blood sugar readings and neither suggested restarting insulin!

Glad to see you had good bloodwork sounds like you are on a healthier path.

Dh has to go back in for labs in 2 weeks. Will be interesting to see what his labs show. Everything was fine on his last check other than his good cholesterol was 1pt on the low side. So I'm guessing that will be improved this time.
