  • Eating the Atkins way when spouse isn't following plan

Is this a dangerous thing? I thought I read this somewhere on the boards, so I want to make sure I've got this right.

My dh prefers to eat low carb/low calorie. He has always taken good care of himself, so I don't presume to tell him how to eat--that's not the issue here.

The issue is that he is very good about eating whatever I put on the table for him, he's not fussy at all. However, I don't want to mess him up by feeding him high fat AND high carb, kwim?

He still eats carbs, mostly whole wheat and not all that often, but also simple carbs and sugar--overall he's pretty good about his diet, just different from me. I don't want my ways to make him gain weight or pose problems for him, though.

This can be a recipe for "not good".

Of course, he can avoid the butter on the vegetables, things like that.

Oh. Right. I don't put a lot of extras on his food the way I do my own, but I was thinking about this and honestly, I cook way better than I did before, just with a bit more fat. I believe that if I hold off on the extra butter, like you mentioned Atkinsgal, and refrain from adding more cheese than on mine, then I'll be ok.

Gah, I'd hate to sabotage my dh whilst I get healthy!

      Thanks girl.

Remember, "whole wheat" doesn't necessarily mean "healthy". A lot of the "whole wheat" breads I see in the grocery store still have HFCS in them. Dr. Atkins said "whole grain". Big difference!

YES--wrong choice of words. Whole grain is what I usually buy for him, not whole wheat. Matter of fact, I'd actually prefer my own recipe for whole grain bread so I know what the what goes in it. LOL

I also just realized you said "low carb/low calorie".

            Is he hungry a lot?

And having those simple sugars ... that's undoing what ever good low carb might be doing for him.

No, he's not hungry alot that I can tell.

See, this is how it is. He doesn't want to go on Atkins, which is totally fine with me. He takes care of himself his own way and doesn't have any health issues, etc. I agree about the simple sugars, but you know, people make the choices that they do, and that's ok. I just want to make sure that while I'm doing what is best for me, I'm not derailing his health somehow. If that's going to happen, I don't want it to be my fault!

It'll be pretty clear if things start going south for him. Just give him the leaner cuts of meat, pull the skin off his chicken, and hold off on the butter for his stuff like you said.

My spouse and I eat totally different, but we are able to sit down and eat the "same" meal together. We just add/take things away as required (although I am pretty much on maintenance).

Thank you Farley, this is what I mean to do now that I'm thinking it through. It's good to see that someone else has figured this out before me. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Eating the Atkins way when spouse isn't following plan

Dh and I were on this together but recently my Dr. pulled me off. I don't need preached at there were medical reasons behind it and I trust my Dr. until I can get a few medical things sorted out I need to be off plan. I am now back on WW and DH is still happily losing on Atkins. Like you I do have to think harder about what I am making, I don't want to accidently add something in to mess him up or put fat in mine when I shouldnt' have it.

I tend to prepare our food at the same time but seperately. If I cook on the griddle mine is on one side, his is on the other etc. I also dont' want any of my items to tempt him into going off plan. So if it's something he can't eat that I know he'd be tempted by I tend to eat it when he's not home. Even though I know he's dedicated to plan and doubt he'd go off there's no point in making it harder than it needs to be.

You know my husband thinks that Atkins is a kooky diet..however there is a man who works with him, who shoots insulin on a daily basis. This man told my husband that he does Atkins and its the way to go...but my husband cannot give up the things we do. So what I do is make everyone what I eat except add a potato or rice or more veggies.... I just don't want to fight about that...I figure I will let this "kooky" diet do the talking...if you know what I mean...
