  • Induction v OWL

Now I am at the end of week 2, is it better to move onto OWL or stay a bit longer on the induction phase?
I have no cravings and I am happy with my weight loss so far which is 14lb, though only 2lb on the 2nd week, which is not an issue as I am looking at monthly targets as markers for my journey!
In the long term is there any advantage in moving on sooner?
    Yours thoughts appreciated.......

Do you have the book? Dr. Atkins has a little quiz in there to take to help you decide if it's time to move on or if you should stick around in induction a while. He gives his approval for extended induction so it's up to you. Take the quiz and see what the results are.

Looks like you are off to a good start.

      Re: Induction v OWL

I was roughly where you are when I started 8 months ago. I was on the fence about moving on as well.

I came to the realization though that I don't have issues losing weight, and because of my size, it would probably be best to add in that first extra 5 carbs of vegetables because I didn't want my body to think it was starving itself and in turn stall me.

Yes - many people choose to stay on induction when they have plenty of weight to lose, but an extra 5 carbs of veggies is how I justified moving into OWL. I could stay at each rung as long as I wanted to. I could back up and move forward when I felt I was ready.

So - my recommendation seeing as you haven't got issues losing weight is to move on and let yourself go through the journey of OWL and learn about yourself and what your body likes, doesn't like, what makes it stall, what makes it drop.

Congrats on your loss so far You've already lost over 10% of your goal!

It wasn't until I read a post by atkinsgal08 that I realised that I was on a different book, I am reading the new 2010 book. I have just ordered from Amazon the DANDR

Even reading NANY (the new book), I would vote for moving to OWL.

You can stay on OWL Rung 1 for a while, and the extra 5 net carbs of Induction/Foundation vegetables aren't likely to hurt you.

Also, having monthly targets may not be the best plan. Having expectations often leads to unnecessary disappointment.

I hear you atkinsgal08, I realise saying targets was the wrong word, what I meant was monthly figures will be how I base my success! I'm hoping this will level out any minor ups and downs on a weekly basis!
I have read a lot of your messages and I value your opinions and suggestions....you talk a lot of sense!

Keep in mind that some months you might not have any loss.

              That's still a successful month!

I had about 5-6 months where I lost 0.2 pounds per month.

This isn't a race ... not even with yourself!

These are excellent words to live by.

My thoughts: The reality is that we ALL need to have a more healthy WOE, and giving up just because there is no loss should be out of the question. The thing that makes our month successful is that we continued to eat a healthy diet for the full month. Putting healthy fats and veggies into our bodies is so much better than saying, "Well this ain't working for me, I think I'll have some pizza."--Not that I am saying anyone in this thread has said or felt this, I just know that in the past I have. I totally get wanting to drop the pounds, and it's easy to get discouraged, but letting the focus be on getting healthy is such a better goal than losing weight. Let's let losing the weight be the awesome by-product of a healthy WOE!
