  • i need help!

i am extremely embarrassed to be writing this right now,on a public forum, for all to read...
i was doing fairly okay on atkins for about four weeks( i lost 8lbs) up until yesterday when i met with family after four months & v all went for movie & picnic....
i binged BIG time on chocolate crepes, ice creme, pop corn & chinese food & to top it off,had four huge slices of pizza late night....
i could not sleep all thru last night....i feel terrible, disgusting and loathsome...
the carb load made me feel SICK & uneasy the ENTIRE night!!
i can't believe i did this to myself,i am my own worst enemy!! and ive let myself down!!
i kept thinking...was it all worth it??did that food give me any long term pleasure?? ne longterm benefits?? and i can say with all honesty that is WAS NOT! the post carb/sugar feeling is simply YUCK!! the guilt is YUCK!! letting myself down is YUCK!!
ive gained 4 lbs back since yesterday....it was shocking but it was a hard slap of reality!! of wat carbs do to ur system.....
i don't know where to go from here....im feeling very depressed....
i'm sorry that i'm such a disgrace for all & this forum particularly...
    plz i need help!

    Re: i need help!

O.K. You fell off the horse. Get back on as soon as you can. I have been an active member of this bulletin board for awhile now and have read alot of similar stories. The best advice I can tell you is to start over and make better choices next time. We are all here to support eachother. Next time you feel like falling off the horse again, think about how you feel right now. Ask yourself if the risk is worth the reward. Honestly, to me, 99% of this lifestyle change is mental. It's about will power. How bad do you want to loose weight? What lenght will you go to loose the weight? Once you loose the weight and you will, how bad do you want to keep it off. Everyone makes mistakes. And what matters more than making mistakes is how you bounce back and what you learned from them. Good luck on your wight loss journey!

      Re: i need help!

      Hi kareena,

It's good you came to here to get support. Now, I'm going to ask you some silly questions.

When you were learning the alphabet, did you get it right the first time? The second time?
When you were learning to read, did you get it right the first time? The second time?
When you were learning to write, did you get it right the first time? The second time?
When you were learning grammar, did you get it right the first time? The second time?

The answer is No. You didn't. But you kept on doing it until you got it. This way of eating (woe) and way of life (wol) are very different from what you're used to. It has to be learned. Sometimes you fall off, but you get right back on track and keep doing it.

Is carb-binging going to slow down your progress? Yes.
Is it the end of the world? No.

Don't be so hard on yourself. The takeaway lesson from this should be that even though you had more carbs than you should, it's ok. Just get right back into the groove and go on like it is just the bobble it was.

      Hope this helps.

      Mini goal 1: 180 1/23/2010 2: 170 4/25/2010 , 3: 160, 4: 150, 5: 140 Final Goal: 125

        Re: i need help!

        Hello

        No worries!

I am sure everyone of us had at least once their "freak out" time..
It happened to me ... I think 2 during my diet... Once for as long as 1 week
Once it was just going and getting myself 4 (!!!) cheeseburgers

You know what helps me most? The Keton Sticks!!!

Yes yes yes! When I see them purple my heart is happy! And I check every day...

But if I cheat at least 1 day - then your keton sticks turn white... and it takes few days to get them pink and then red and back to purple!

Try! It is extremely encouraging to see the prove that your body does burn fat... and helps to stay on track

And don't be upset... This diet should make people feel better about themselves - not worse!

        GOOD LUCK!

Unless you ate a physically impossible amount of food, there's no way that the weight you "gained" was fat. I promise. It doesn't happen overnight.

What you are experiencing is bloating, swelling, aka water retention.

Get yourself back up in the saddle, arm yourself with your book and your bottle of water, and get back out there.

The more you drink, the easier it will be for your body to purge itself of the unhealthy foods you partook in yesterday.

Hello Kareena...First of all, you need to forgive yourself...and then get right back on the plan..you should never call yourself a disgrace....you need to give yourself the time to lose anything you might have gained..as it may take a few days...If you do not do that you will never get back on this wol...Just think of it as a fresh start and go forward.. and don't look back..speaking for myself.. I have fallen off the Atkins Horse 5 times.. and each time, I get angry, forgive myself, and get right back on it..then I lose what I gained and proceed with losing more weight..We are all human, we aren't perfect....good luck...and remember we are all here to support each other...

                Re: i need help!

Yes, Keton Stripes are available in almost all pharmacies since those are among essential things for diabetics to control sugar in blood (or something like that). I was worried I wouldn't find them when I moved to Hong Kong, but no... even here, almost in every pharmacy

They cost around 5$ pack of 100... You can also order them on-line.

                Good luck!
If need support - more then pleased to help I have my exam finishing soon and gonna do nothing for whole days Perhaps we can chat about Atkins some time!

The ketone strips aren't reliable ... I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to track them down. They don't tell you if you're doing Atkins correctly, they don't tell you you'll lose weight.

True, they only tell if you are in Ketosis (the essential process how we loose weight on atkins). However, different people get into this process at different times, some may have 60gr of carbs and be in ketosis, others get into it only at 20gr. My is about 20-30gr. Some lose weight even with pink coloured stripes.. others with purple. But it surely tells that your body does something and does help to motivate to stay on track, especially if you do get it purple.

And it is essentially true that they do not tell if you do atkins correctly, this only your atkins book (or website, whatever source you use may tell you).
They definitely don't tell if you will lose weight - since they are not scales, but again, they show that you are in a process, which personally I find very persuasive prove that my body burns fat to get the energy it needs.

Its okay Im pretty sure most of us can relate. And I dont think you put on 4 pounds that fast I just think it's simply water weight. Your on a long journey to losing weight and there might be mistakes along the way but you can turn this around by learning from them. I come from a family where get-togethers are surrounded by food so I understand. If you think that will become a problem again try to pack you some food on your diet to take along with you......maybe that will help.

thanku so much for the reply pleasantlyplump81
ur right abt packing food & taking it along to situations where u know ur bound to make the wrong choices, or rather there are no available safe options to eat from in the first place !!(ive started taking my own version of chicken popcorn to the cinema now!)
i belong to a culture where food is heavily carb & sugar laden(we put sugar even while cooking lentils & chicken!! i know..sad..) & every bit of meat is coated with breading & gravy is again swimming in cornstarch!! i know it is going to b very hard for me becuz i know people in my family are already mocking my new WOE & r incessantly making fun of my food choices when vr at family get togethers(i'm already the 'talk' amongst even distant relatives now betting how much longer till i fall back to bread & white rice!!they tell me i can never continue with this WOE for life as its unrealistic & i can NEVER shun the food my family has celebrated since times immemorial & that ive grown up eating !!(puke)!! & the minute i put rice back on my plate ill gain back all the weight in not more than a week!! don't know wat gave them the impression i will discontinue this woe wen i reach my goal weight??) but for the first time in my life ive completely stopped caring abt wat & how others in my family think/perceive of me & my lifestyle!! & it feels aboslutely LIBERATING!!
i know once i reach my goal weight they will all come running to me for advice!! (i'm told two of my cousins have already secretly started following atkins!! lol so glad to b of some amount of inspiration even though i haven't lost that much weight as yet!! hehe)
i wish all atkineers a happy, successful, and satiating journey on their weight loss program!!
thank u all for ur support!!

What a great positive attitude towards the snide family comments

i was 70 kilos (154 lbs) on a 5'1 frame!! (i looked like a ping pong ball!) i lost 10 kilos (22 lbs) on my own 2 years back (i had not heard of atkins up until this year) but stalled for good year & a half on this weight while trying a gazillion other diets!
i started atkins on 60 kilos (132 lbs) & have thus far just been able to lose 3 kilos only (6 lbs) but i'm adamant & terribly hopeful that this woe will help me lose another 22 lbs my target weight is 50 kilos,110 lbs..
