    Re: Resistant starch

I've recently had a lot of digestive problems and extreme abdominal pain and I've been doing major Atkins diet for about a year. I believe I've been eating too much fat and protein and not enough healthy food. I had to change to eating healthier. Beans also seem to work well with me and I've been eating more veggies but am still enjoying butter and high fat dressings. I'm interested in learning about the healthy, high fiber foods that are low in carb so the resistant starch looks like something that could work with me well.

      Re: Resistant starch

If you are having extreme abdominal pain, I think you should go to a doctor to get that checked out.

In regards to the resistant starch, I don't think they have any tables or charts that tell you how much resistant starch a food has. If there are tables/charts, then it would be appreciated if someone can supply a link to them.

Maryannie, I'm concerned about the comment "I had to change to eating healthier."

Seriously, if you are following Atkins properly, I do not believe it is possible to "eat healthier". (Although, that does not address individual metabolic concerns unique to your situation.)

As for the "resistant starch", if you choose to increase your carb intake, look to the vegetables within the lower end of the glycemic index. If you are into the OWL rungs and high enough on the ladder to add in some beans and whole grains, it is all part of the program.

Me, I add a lettuce salad with oil and vinegar and my blood sugars jump, so I have to be careful to add the carbs with breakfast or lunch to avoid waking up with blood sugars in the upper 100s or 200s.

I would agree with the recommendation that you might need to seek medical advice for the abdominal pain, there may be some underlying poblems influencing your situation. Keep a journal of your dietary intake, to include water, fiber and supplements.

Hopefully, they can help you determine the cause of the pain. I went through almost a year with stomach cramps, diarhea and feeling like a limp washrag, only to find out I was reacting badly to the Glucophage my Dr. had prescribed for me. Within a day or two after stopping the meds, my problem corrected itself.

        Good luck with your problem.

If you want to add legumes & grains to your diet, you can do that and still follow the rules of Atkins - simply move up the rungs! Have you read DANDR '02? Are you eating all of the required/recommended veggies? Drinking at least 64oz of water/day?

            Re: Resistant starch

I've never had health problems before but I know for the past year, with being on Atkins, I've been eating mostly high fat and high protein foods. I ate very little vegetables. I ended up in the hospital from the pain and my tests were all normal including gallbladder and kidney. Although, the pain was mostly near gallbladder area. When I take an acid reducing medicine, it seems to help although I don't seem to have the classic acid reflux symptoms. Anyway, seems when I start eating healthier, more veggies, fiber, and vitamins, it seems to get better. I wish I could eat the high fat, high protein foods because I lost weight much better that way. Well, at least I feel healthier now and I do love veggies!!

              Re: Resistant starch

I think if you ate lots of fat and protein and very little veggies you were not really doing Atkins. In volume most of what I eat are vegetables every day. I eat one serving of proten and two serving of vegetables every supper. If you looked at my plate you would see vegetables We should not eat high protein on Atkins - we keep protein relative moderate. It is very healthy eating especially if we keep concentrating on whole unprocessed foods which I think most of us do.
I wish you luck with your NEW chosen Way of Eating. It does sounds like how I am eating and I think that is healthy

                Re: Resistant starch

Thanks for your help everyone. I have to admit that eating high protein, high fat helped me lose weight quickly and I felt fuller longer, although I was rather tired. It's sometimes hard to stop eating that way knowing how well it works.
