  • Experienced with Atkins pls reply

    Hello,

I know there are a lot of negative critics regarding the plan. I have the book and DVD, and the plan seems to make a lot of sense.
In your experience how has the plan benefited you for long-term success?

I often read that problems often occur when carbs are re-introduced into your diet.

    Thanks.

Well - as with all changes in eating, if you return to your old ways after 'dieting' you will certainly get the same problems you had before you changed

However on Atkins we dont just add back any old carbs willynilly once we have got to our goal weight, but we learn how to add them and still lose weight.

The beauty about following all the phases of Atkins is that we reintroduce carbs in a measured order, watching how it affects our body, so can see which foods our body can handle.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I did this once before... and after thyroid cancer.. I'm back to stay...

I am not the perfect Atkineer... nor will I ever be... but I know that this way of eating is right for me... because sugar is my demon... it sucks the life and energy out of me... causes me to have cravings that I imagine are like some drug addiction... when not commited to this woe... I think about cake, pie, ice cream.. even buttered toast with jam (at night when nothing is in the house)...

with this way of eating... I'm more able to step back and ask myself... am I hungry... or am I just wanting to feel the 'pleasure' of the treat?

this plan give me more control over what I put in my mouth...
      2-15-10 194.8 - highest ever!
      2-20-10 190.4 - new scale
      3-20-10 177.8 - 1 month
      5-10-10 169.8 - 25 pounds gone!

There are negative critics about everything! That being said, I first went on Atkins in 1981. I lost enough weight ot keep the Marines from discharging me for being over weight. I was always accused of overeating, problem was I was just eating the wrong foods.

I went on it again in the early 90s. Just because I was "blossoming" way too nicely.

I started again in the early 2000s, but never got motivated to stick with it.

Now, at 53, I'm into Atkins to avoid dying before my grandchildren graduate high school. I know now that I should have stuck with it when I started in in the 80s, but, apparently, I was much smarter back then.

Using Atkins together with Weight Watchers, I started low carbing it in February of 2009. On that program, I lost 60 pounds, but my blood sugars were still obscenely high (300s to 400s).

February 2010 I started back on Atkins. Re-reading Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition (DANDR02), reading Atkins Diabetes Revolution (ADR) and doing a lot more research on studies done since 1990 as well as on diabetes.

It is important to note, I have NOT lot any significant weight (We're talking pounds on a scale) since restarting Atkins. AND THAT IS OK!

I've gone from a size 48 waist to a 42/44, my shirts are looser in the waist and tighter in the chest. I have more energy than I ever had in my 40s. My bloodwork has shown marked improvement in Cholesterol readings, triglycerides, liver and kidneys are fine, A1C readings are dropping, my bkood sugars are closer to normal than they have been since 1989 when I was diagnosed as a diabetic. AND, I'm no longer taking insulin. My joints feel better, my other aches and pains are improving and the almost total inability for sores and cuts to heal has ben reversed.

ALL of these improvements are far more important in my overall health than the numbers on a scale.

That being said, according to DANDR02 & ADR, some individuals who are Type 2 diabetics and insulin resistant can take longer (sometimes months) for weight to begin dropping.

I'm on Atkins now for LIFE, I have to be to maintain the quality of life needed to enjoy the remainder of what time I have here on Earth.

(Last note: The problems I have with carbohydrates ALWAYS come back, if I return to the way I used to eat. It's the old addage "If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got!"

Time to break free of the always gots!

What problems are you referring to

I need to know because I have added many healthy carbs back in my diet.
Just not donuts and ice cream and sweetened coffee from Dunkin Donuts and pasta and refined flour and white rice and sugar cereals.

like others above my cholesterol numbers are in "normal" range for the first time in 5 years...also my triglicerides are in the "normal" range, I no longer have "fatty liver" and my diabetes is considered "diet controlled".

Personally, I can't find ANYTHING bad about Atkins - I don't miss anything I use to eat because there are recipes that will replace just about everything. If there isn't a recipe there is probably a reason why -- we don't need to be eating that particular thing.

Bad carbs made you fat in the first place (and me) why would you go back to eating them, you'll just get fat again?

You will add low glycemic carbs on your journey and if you are one of the lucky ones you will be able to eat beans every once in a while and maybe whole grains (maybe).

Did you pick up the book yet and read it?
