  • My mom

Over Easter I was shocked the way my mom would eat. I told my husband how worried I was.

Well two weeks ago we had lunch together and she told me she was on a new diet. She explained by saying she went to the same medical weight loss center her sister went to and is borderline diabetic and HTN (I could have told her that).

Anyway, she said it's a weight loss system where she checks in every week and is given appetite suppressants for a limited amount of time. I told her I wasn't happy about. They also have her on a very restricted diet of 500-700 calories a day. She is to only eat meat, low glycemic veggies and cottage cheese the first week and then afterward, depending on her progress they add other foods. Does this sound familiar to anyone???

I asked her if she wanted my Atkins book and she said she would take it. I told her I was glad she wasn't eating carbs and sugar anymore and eating more healthy but 500-700 calories a day will back fire, especially off suppressants.

I don't know if I can convince her to do Atkins specifically but she knows I don't believe in a restricted calorie diet. I tried explaining to her I put in atleast 1600 calories a day and still lose weight. I am happy she and my dad won't give me a hard time about my diet anymore. She did commend my way of eating & which validated my reasons for being on this diet.

My point is I am happy for her change, just not happy that she is doing it with the medical weight loss center. I can't say she is surrounded by professionals since I don't know if she is actually even seeing a doctor. I am going to ask her more about it this weekend when I see her.

I am crossing my fingers she will read portions of the Atkins books to atleast stay focused and understand the reasons why we should not consume bad carbs, daily. I am also putting together a list of recipes also to help her with the monotony. Maybe one day I will print up my daily food logs to show her eating a lot does not mean you can't lose weight.

At least its great theres no negative comments coming from your parents.
I hope she reads the book and decides to give it a go(fingers crossed).

      Re: My mom

In my (admittedly limited) experience with those clinics, they are basically just a front for those appetite suppression drugs, with very limited food and exercise education, etc. They only seem to care about quick results (so they can post your before and after pictures on their walls) and don't think about maintenance. I think your suspicions are correct. Maybe if you can find some anecdotal evidence about people regaining all the weight lost using these clinics. I certainly regained everything (which wasn't even more than like 10 pounds) once I stopped starving myself. There was no overall health improvement, either.
