  • Steamed veggies

I bought a big pot, with a steamer basket, and have been eating all my veggies steamed, except for my daily 2 cups of lettuce.

Every day, I like to steam a whole tomato,(small size romaine style) a whole red onion (golf ball size) a piece of broccoli, a dozen or so snow peas, and a couple pieces of cabbage leaf.

I did some internet searching, trying to add up the carbs, and have been having some trouble figuring it out.

I really was shocked at how sweet the red onion is, after steaming it for 8 min. So, I wasn't so surprised to learn that the carbs go up in onions, if they are cooked.

I guess I really need to buy a scale, and weigh each veggie, that I add to my mix...

But until I do, does anyone care to make a guesstimate on how many carbs my steamed mixed veggies might have?

You should learn how to estimate yourself.
    • A cup is about the size of a baseball.
    • 1/2 cup is about the size of a scoop of ice cream.
    • 1/4 cup is about the size of an egg.
    • 1 tablespoon about is the size of a tea bag.
    • 1 teaspoon is about the size of a thimble.

For accurate carb counts, you can look up the foods in the USDA database:

Don't forget to count net carbs, not just carbs.

I wasn't so surprised to learn that the carbs go up in onions, if they are cooked.
The carbs don't go up. Onions reduce their volume when cooked, so the carbs are more "concentrated"... which is why a cup of raw onion will have fewer net carbs than a cup of cooked onion.

      So a scale isn't useful?

It is to me. I use a scale.

Sally, I have no idea how big a scoop of ice cream is here... The estimates are actually from Atkins Essentials.

Well here, ours are a tiny bit bigger than a golfball.

Breadbelly, you can probably purchase a set of standardized cooking measuring cups where you are, since the Philippines does get American import goods and the like.

Invest in a few measuring cups. You don't need to buy a scale if you don't want. i use measuring cups but I am pretty good at eye-balling an amount,. You will get the hang of it
