  • Atkins: burns fat or weight?

Hello, im curious about the atkins diet and currently thinking of changing my lifestyle to a low carb atkins one. However, i was wondering, from what you guys have experienced, does atkins burn weight or does it focus mainly on burning fat? By buring weight i mean, does it also burn water weight, muscle and bone tissue or is it fat that you see come off? Thanks alot

edit: also, is there a big difference in the newest book as opposed to one released in 96 or 98 (i forget which year the book i have is written in)? thanks again

Hello I will just comment with what I know, Atkins makes you lose water weight and also fat. I weighed 170 a couple years ago when I started atkins and I am 5'3 21 years old. I was on atkins for 2 months and lost 25 pouns, and then stopped atkins but never gained any of my weight back. I kinda was stuck at 145, up until April 1st of this year. I decided to start atkins again, and I as of this morning weighed myself and I am 136.8, so I am slowly but surely losing the weight. The weight has been all fat since the very beginning, I have not lost any muscle, and am still as toned as I have ever been. Water weight yes you will lose, but you have to lose your water weight before you can even begin to lose fat. I hope this helps, and I would highly recommend atkins it is a really great diet. If you want to lose weight, I seriously tried EVERY diet and never lost until I tried atkins. See I was 125 my whole life and then was put on deprovera the birth control shot, and in a matter of 5 years I gained 52 lbs, and atkins is the only way that I have got the weight off. I hope this helps. Happy losing to you

yopu want the 2002 Dr ATKINS' NEW DIET REVOLUTION book for this place.

Of course you will lose lean mass on amy plan as everything not fat is called lean includingthe fluid stores, excess skin and other tissues obese folk have that they will not need when thinner like all those extra miles of blood vessels too.

All weight loss eating programs lose body fat and some lean tisues. Most low cal plans lose 75% fat and 25% lean tissues. Atkins loses 90% fat and only 10% lean with just the eating for the obese folk doing it is the Studies done in Philly and at the VA hospital on the overweight folk. Then you add the mandatory exercise part of the Atkins and you are actually adding muscle mass while you lose weight. The bone loss concept comes form the initial calcium losses during the early weeks of dieting but as the medical studies investigating it discovered it stops at about the 6 week mark and taking calcium supplements can help control any bone calcium you might have been going to lose.

Read your book Dr Atkins explains it all in there

      Happy low carbing.

        Here's another thing to consider.

In my case, I've lost 65lbs. That's 65lbs that my leg muscles don't have to support when I'm doing my every day activities. After a while, I noticed my leg muscles were starting to shrink while my upper body muscles remained the same. Increasing my resistance training on my legs solved that problem.

That's one reason why exercise is a non-negotiable.

although many people say that any weight loss is good - i disagree. You do not want to lose lean muscle tissue.

You can protect against such a loss if you exercise (weight training and cardio).

No question, induction loss is mainly water loss. Some will be fat, but most is water.

Does it matter? It will make you look thinner, feel better and keep you motivated. But yeah, losing muscle is bad because more muscle means a faster metabolism, which means more fat is burned.

Keep in mind that you will burn more fat if you do not just follow the meal plan, but also exercise. No matter which "diet" you chose, you will always optimize your results by both diet and exercise.
