It absolutely is not impossible. We all live in the real world, every day.Keep doing what you're doing & you'll keep getting what you're getting!!!213.5/126-131/140, 5'5" age 33Original Goal: 160Size 22/4-6-8/8Start BMI: 35.5Current BMI: 21.8MaintenanceStarted Low Carbing 5/23/03Started Atkins 6/11/03

be honest with them...if you were an alcoholic they wouldn't give you alcohol right? well this is the same thing except with carbs. I'm not ashamed to tell people I'm doing atkins nor do I expect them to do anything special for me but they usually do it anyway because they love me. My family does the same for my mom because she is a vegetarian, they don't expect her to eat meat. There is alot of stigma about eating low carb and we have to stop being ashamed to tell people or else we will never be able to make it in real world situations. I always bring a dish I can eat to parties...you can even stop at a deli or something and pick something up...I keep non perishable snacks in my bag at all times and most important I don't apologize for not eating everything being served. I care too much about getting this weight off to screw it up now.32yr old Female

I have had the experience of eating at my in laws on several occasions when the food wasn't "friendly". Once I did not eat at all.. Just picked myself something else when I left.. and once I raided the fridge and ate some plain lettuce and cucumber slices cause all she had was that lowfat dressing full of sugar.. Yuck!
I think the going to the store suggestion was a good one.. You could always pick your self up some legal foods. I have been on this WOE for over a year.. and found ways to eat appropriately almost anywhere. Sometimes it can be hard though and ya gotta be creative.

Been there, and ate nothing more than once. I rationalized they wanted me there more than they wanted me there eating something wrong. I (and my wife) have also gone to a special Sunday school dinner given in our (other teacher) honor because they were serving Lasagna. We came later and still enjoyed the party activities. Everyone understood and if they didn't immediately knew after being told the reason. Of course, I wear my low carb on my sleeve.Kent - 35-M-6'4"

Nutri,
I think I would of had a small, small bit of the cole slaw, and some ribs. Yes they had suger, but still the carb count was down, sticking to the ribs. Then I would of made sure to get my veggies the next day and chance I could. Some here may disagree with me, but if you go over one day and make up for it the next, its far better than blowing it day after day. I am a firm believer that this diet works because it is consistant. But, being consistant doesnt mean it has to be the exact same each day. Like you said, life can make it hard to live with, but its working around it that makes it work.... 20 good days with 1 bad, is far better than 10 good with 10 bad. If that makes any sense... :sarcasmCathy in Silverton / City of the Falls

Good heavens, where have I been living for the past 4 years?Like I said, eating this way is nearly impossible in the "real world."
If the "real world" means compromising your health to please others, there is a serious problem there!!
Dr. Atkins plan is so 'real world' based, that's why its so easy to stick with for life!! Its REAL FOOD .. not that processed pseudo-food you buy in the center aisles of the grocery store.....

Its your time to think selfishly....
This is about the fourth time that I'm trying Atkins on a serious note. Having said that, it doesn't mean that I've always gone completely off track, I believe that it has had a profound effect on my way of thinking about carbs, etc, but like I said in my other posts on the Induction forum, today is the day I start Induction over again. I'm giong to do it this time.
Think selfishly. You are given permission to think selfishly when it comes to your health. Think in your mind you are going there to see the people, not eat their food. Give permission to yourself to think selfishly and you will do fine!

When I get invited to someones place for dinner, I tell them in advance that there are certain things I cannot eat. Never had any bad vibes from anyone telling them in advance. I have been out to business luncheons and dinners, where I quietly went over to the waiter on the side and asked them if I could please have a salad, instead of what they were serving. Never a problem there, as many people have allergies, are vegetarian, do not eat pork products. I find that if you're honest with people they go out of there way to be helpful
My in-laws now always have something induction friendly for me now, without questioning me. When I travel, I find it easy to pick and choose what I want at restaurants. So for me there are NO EXCUSES not to follow exactly what I would eat at home. I guess it takes discipline and really wanting to lose weight badly and wanting to be healthy!!!
