  • High Protein, low fat, low carb diet transition 2 ATKINS ?

If previously I had been following a high lean protein, very low carb and low fat diet (been 25 days) and had been succesful (23lbs) do you think transitioning to an atkins induction will cause me to gain weight since I already had cut out the carbs (except for some veggies) with the only main difference between atkins and my previous way of eating being an increase in my fat intake....in other words I was eating more like 75% protein, 5% carbs and 20% fats.

Thanks so much and if u could get back to me as soon as possible I would greatly appreciate it!

Can't wait to adopt the Atkins way of life...

    Hi and welcome.

I would suggest that you read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition for information on doing this diet properly.

Second, you will have to cut back on the amount of protein when you begin Atkins. Atkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein one. The caloric ratios are 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs.

Third, I can't say for certain if you will temporarily gain weight or not. It really depends on how well you adjust your eating and your body's metabolism.

      :wave Welcome to ADBB

protein in the human body as fuel is treated just like carbs :yikes so you will find a nice change with the fats in Atkins at 65% of your toal calls and your protein down at 30%. You may or may not get the initial glycogen losses as that will depend on how hard you worked your body doing the exercise part of your other plan. Atkins has mandatory aerobic and resistance exercising. Read DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 or newer printing so you understand how body fat liberating doing Atkins is and why high protein can actually slow down weight loss.

      Happy low carbing.

in your situation, i am not sure that Atkins induction will initially help you. you will be adding fat. generally, that is not a great thing to do.

but yeah, your protein is probably a bit too high. i hope that you have been really drinking yoru water.

P.s. do you eat lean proteins or high fat protein.

I know that this is a support forum for atkins, but let me ask you a question.

If what you are doing is similar to Atkins and it is working, then why change it?

If it aint' broke, then why fix it???

          AtkinsLegit,

I am wondering... if you are happy/successful with the 75/30/5 ratio you mentioned, and you don't get cravings, and you don't struggle with your eating, or get hungry AND you are losing weight, it is obviously working for you. I know it may sound sacrilegous to ADBB, but if what you are doing is working for you, why not keep going with it until you find it doesn't work for you anymore? Just because all of us here advocate Atkins doesn't mean it is a WOE for everyone. You may lose more on Atkins or you may gain, only you can find out. It is one WOL for most of us here, but it doesn't mean other WOE can't work for others

              Hey guys,
The main reason I switched to atkins was because my other way of eating was way tooooo limited and I knew sooner or later I was setting myself up for failure--because when you're eating plain (non-seasoned) lean meat and the same like 3 types of veggies...your bound to lose it. That way of eating was good to at least help kick the carb cravings...but I think if I'm really serious about changing the way I look and feel I need to adopt a WOE for life.

              Induction Day 4 and counting...

Oh and my tastebuds are thanking me...they remember what food tastes like again :icondance

If you are committed to making Atkins your WOE for life. Be sure to read the OWL chapters too ---'cuz if your taste buds are doing the happy dance on Induction, they'll reach nirvana during OWL.

woohoo for you. Atkins is the good tasting way of eating to lose weight that forces us to learn portion control through practice practice practice eating the correct amounts every day and listening truely listening to our hunger tell us we need food not our eyeballs emotions or empty tummy space.

                  Happy low carbing.
