Dr Atkins states in DANDR chapter 11 Q and A if the total cals in are more then the total cals burned from all bodily sources you gain weight period. He said that any weight loss plan could work he just felt Atkins with the metabolic advantage would work better for us.

He addresses why it should be high fat too when he talks about not getting your protein levels too high and again when he tells us we can't do a low fat Atkins.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that study made my jaw fall into my lap (and considering that's where my boobs are because of gravity, that's something!)
actually the 15 pounds is based solely on the person changing from the USDA high carb plan to the Atkins plan both of 2000 cals the pounds lost on the change get larger with a higher cal total but that assumes the person wasn't gaining on the higher cal total when they made the switch. it take the human body more then twice as many cals to convert fats from mouth to energy then it does carbs and that is where the extra cals burned up comes from on the Atkins plan. but Atkins was and always will be calorie control through carb control because we only eat enough of the fats and proteins to satisfy our hunger at the time we are eating and we stop. Gorging isn't part of Atkins.

    Happy low carbing.
