  • And they say Atkins is unhealthy....

My sisters and cousins celebrated Mother's Day today with our moms. One of my sisters is on Atkins like me. It was a potluck late afternoon meal. So, there was the usual: grilled chicken, roast turkey, salad, a pasta dish, a rice dish and bread.

The diet thing came up in the conversation. Yes, Beth and I are on Atkins. Yes, together we lost over 100 pounds. No, we don't eat added sugars and refined carbs. Yes, our cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar are all normal. No, we don't have any vitamin deficiencies. No, we are on the second phase of Atkins and we can eat some fruit, legumes, starchy veggies, nuts, and grains. No, we don't feel like we're starving. No, low carb diets have been around for at least 100 years. No, it's not fat that makes you fat it's sugar. Blah, blah, blah.

I made it through the main course okay. Then came dessert. I brought 2 1/2 pounds of sliced strawberries and a container of real whipped cream. My other sister brought a layer cake. A cousin brought brownies and another cousin had a big chocolate cake.

So, Beth and I eat our strawberries and cream. Our other sister and cousins chow down on the cakes and brownies. Conversation goes back to our diet...No, we don't eat added sugars or refined grains. Yes, we're happy eating strawberries and cream. No, our diet isn't going to kill us. Yes, we're quite sure we don't want any cake or brownies. No, it's not the fat, it's the sugars and other stuff in things like cake and brownies. No really, the fruit is fine for us.

At the end of the afternoon, all of the strawberries that I can eaton my-unhealthy-diet-that's-going-to-kill-me were gone.

Funny, how the folks shovelling cake, bread, pasta, brownies AND cookies they had later with coffee lecture me and my sister about our unhealthy diet..... :sarcasm

:hug glad you had an ally in your sister to help ward off those negative rays coming at you.
Guess you were not successful in recruiting them as part of your diet support network.

    Happy low carbing.

2Big, the desserts were put on a lazy susan in the middle of the table...Guess what dessert always seemed to be in front of Beth or me? If you guessed the big chocolate cake, you guessed correctly. My family demolished the strawberries and the cakes. They hardly touched the cream----because heavy cream is "fattening" :sarcasm

But, yes, those strawberries and cream were an "unhealthy" part of an "unhealthy" diet----unlike the cakes, cookies, bread and pasta. :sarcasm

Anyhow, good luck to the rest of you today. I'm going to have more "unhealthy" foods today too. I hope I live to see tomorrow.

We celebrated Mother's Day yesterday (I hate crowds).

We went to a steak joint where I had a burger (minus the bun), with all the induction-friendly fixin's a mom could hope for. The people all around me ate from the all-you-can-eat buffet, but everything there's processed. It just didn't appeal to me.

Staying on this way of eating is so easy.

          Happy Mother's Day, all!

I was once told that "I'll die".

In fact that was all I was told. I really didnt understand where the person who said that was coming from, as I am sure we will all die eventually! :sarcasm

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Megs, well done on staying firm.

my ma in law actually cooked... she's so sweet like that.. and there's so many cousins etc.. without mom's that she cooked a big family meal..

I knew there would be meat....

I didn't say a word about my 'diet' until I got there...

as I was fixing my plate... she had my FAVORITE potato casserole...

I told her I was off bread, potatoes and sweets for a while (she also had my FAVORITE DESSERT - a home made chocolate pie.)

she said 'you're not fat'... I said... do you remember I weighed 105 when I married your son?

she laughed.....and didn't say anything else or try to push anything on me...

I happily helped myself to meatloaf (she puts nothing but salt, pepper, onion and bell pepper in it..)... pork roast, green beans (she assured me they had very little oil in them... I didn't explain that I didn't care about that... she had a HUGE salad of mixed veggies (lettuce, cucumber, celery, onion, tomatoes, etc. with assorted dressings to choose from)

now... I was really worried about this dinner at first... but it worked out great...

next thing I'm apprehensive about is my birthday... I'll be 50 and Daddy will be 73... we have the same birthday.. it's a HUGE deal for my 4 sisters.. (because of Daddy lol)

anyway.. I KNOW there's going to be the 'you can have just a bite' thing going on...

so.. I'll be prepared.. with some dessert.. like the berries and creme...

I have a sis who weighs well over 300..... I have tried to convince her to do this before... but i think she ends up eating all the meat, eggs, and cheese... while not eliminating the carbs... :sadblinky maybe someday I'll get her going..

BUT... back to you...GREAT job surviving and THRIVING at the dinner!
