    :help

I just found out that I am diabetic...type 2...I have my first visit with the dietitian this week...I am totally confused. Everything I read from the ADA says to use a plan of fruits, veggies, and whole grains in my diet; and low on the meats and fats...Well, my mind is still set on low carb eating...I know that I can not tolerate lots of fatty meats like I did before, but I would like to know how to combine low carb eating with a plan that will get my diabetes back below the boarderline...So here I am checking in on Atkins board to find someone who has been where I am and now is normal.

    hi :wave Welcome to ha
My husband was diagnosed as a stage 2 diabetic about 15 years ago but after nearly 2 years on this WOE does not register on his 'tiddle sticks' at all. He doesnt take any pills now with his doctor's agreement too :joy

Have you found our Diabetic forum on this board yet?

Scroll down the list of forums and introduce yourself there and I am sure some of the regular posters there will have lots to discuss with you on how doing Atkins helped them. :hug
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

I would be very interested to hear what the dietician has to say! I had gestational diabetes with both my pregnancies (even had to do insulin shots with one). I had to meet several times with a dietician recommended by my OB/GYN. I didn't know anything about Atkins, glycemic loads, or even diabetes at the time, so of course I took the expert's advice. A typical breakfast for me was a banana, a bagel with jam (watching the fat, you know!) and a glass of 2% milk with sugar-free chocolate syrup. No wonder I couldn't control my glucose after breakfast!

I think today many more people, including dieticians, are aware of Atkins, and even embrace Atkins. Please report back on your dietician!

:wave Thanks to both of you for responding to my post...I am nervous about what the dietitian will tell me...I cannot see myself taking on a lifestyle full of carbs...after knowing what I know about them...but I must admit that I have been doing more of a phase 2 style of eating...

my typical breakfast is usually 2 eggs cooked soft in 1 or 2 oz of butter, 1 slice whole grain toast, and 1 mug of coffee with half & half (2T)...But one day per week I give in to hot cereal (2/3 c. oats with 1 oz raisins or walnuts and 1oz H & H). Lunch is usually a salad with Tuna or lean beef patty or chicken breast...Same with dinner---protein (lean meat, veggie & or salad)...I do get hungry between meals and in the middle of the night...I need something before I go to bed...but what? Protein wakes me up thru the night...So I give in to a piece of toast with about 1/4 avacado. I feel good with this...not as tired. But don't think it will help in losing the weight.

I do not know how to adjust my thinking...I think low carb is best.

Yes, I found the thread for Diabetics on Atkins...I will be checking in there often...I really need help with a meal plan that will bring down my weight and be ok or even reverse the diabetes.---I can certainly welcome a buddy that knows the ropes.
