  • I am barely losing...

I was told my a friend who has lost 65 pounds on Atkins that every once in awhile you have to "carb out". She said to eat carbs for 2 days, get our of ketosis and then switch back to induction and it will jump start my weight loss. I tried yesterday, couldn't bring myself to do it for 2 days, though. I am back on induction today and will see what happens. I do know that the one time I caved and ate girl scout cookies I lost weight.

    Anyone tried this?

I am very eager to see how you do. Part of me thinks, well if that works I will try it, but I have been good for 35 days and that part of me thinks If I fall off, can I jump back on? And, what should I eat thats worth giving up 35 good days? Nothing seems good enough,,,,

But do tell how it goes...

I haven't because I know my problem would be I couldn't stop eating the carbs once I started.

I too would be worried about backsliding, reawakening cravings, and knocking my blood sugar out of whack just one or two days of carbs. Everyone can do their personal brand of Atkineering, but only one of them can be THE Diet and is the one researched to death by the good doc. That one called this kind of carb feast the kiss of death. I would be more likely to believe that than risk losing what I worked to achieve.

Okay..I have got the reply to this one!

My neice lost 90-95 pounds on the Atkins, she told me a little secret to her success. She said that every so often she would plateau and she tried all the things that Atkins recommends to triump over that, but the only thing that ever worked was to carb fest for a day, then jumo right back into induction...never failed to work for her. Always lost the weight, got over the hump and went on about her business.

I know I have done that as well, and yes, it does work...but, it may not work well for others. It may be too hard to jump back on the wagon if you do. You know your limits, if you think that you need carb for one day, then do it, just make sure that you can jump back on the wagon right after.

I know this sounds crazy, but it really does work. Just my opinion...take it or leave it, but good luck either way!

Not sure if that works. ensive Maybe for those lucky ones, they can just carb fest for a day and straightly jump right back into the atkins wagon. But most of us - indluding ME- we are not lucky enough to to do that. With just one taste of carb foods - just one time indulgence - and it will be a kiss of failure. I couldn't, for the life of me, just get right back! It would take a week minimum or even a month :geek before I could pluck up enough fortitude to go back to clean induction again. It's like taking 1 step forward & then 2 steps backward. Why take the risk???

Better to follow the plan - consistently - persevere in times of plateau - and you would feel so much better knowing that you're doing everything right & by the book. The reward of a slimmer you would be more satifying knowing that you stick with it - and the feeling of achievement would be all the more sweeter! :wave

Eating high carbs really makes me sick. Bad headache, stomach ache, bloated, other things that don't bear mentioning. It's not worth it to me. If you're eating right, the weight will come off without going through all that.

Well, I will try anything at this point...

If this doesn't work, I am going to go back on Weight Watchers in June. I am tired of working hard and not seeing the results. I know I will lose on WW, plus I have more control over losing. I don't like the lack of control with Atkins. I lost quite a bit during January, but have only lost 9 pounds since Feb 14th. I have 60 to lose...

I understand your frustrations. There are folks here who didn't lose for weeks but eventually started losing again. There is a reward for persistence. Look around the board at our success stories!

Anyway, I am curious about your comment on lack of control with Atkins which is the reason I quoted it. Can you elaborate?

I too am disappointed because I haven't lost anything for weeks and I just started the diet again in April. On the induction I only lost 10 lbs. I don't understand it because the first time I lost almost 18 pounds in 14 days. I have lost inches, but the weight is staying. I can't understand it. I am always in Ketosis, purple.

This is a very effective way to lose weight but it is not the Atkins way. It is called CKD - Cyclical Ketogenic Diet. Alot of weight lifters use it.

It has worked for me. But it is very dangerous and can and has lead to disaster. Can you imagine going to cracker barrel waking up the next day 3 lbs lighter? My mind and willpower is weak enough and now I have this experience. I was carbing up all the time. I am just coming off of a 3 month Carb fest :shame

I would NOT use this as a tool, because it can really throw you off track. There are other safer ways to break a plateau.

Also you should NEVER expect more than 2.5 lbs per week (you may get it but don't expect it)

Since this is the Atkins forum....

Your friend is referring to a "reversal" diet that was included in the 1992 version of DANDR. The reversal diet wasn't to "jump start" weight loss. It was supposed to help a person break out of a legitimate weight loss plateau. The reversal diet was very specific: it simply wasn't doing something like pigging out on a dozen donuts, 4 pizzas and a gallon of ice cream.

Anyhow, as for "carbing up"...Here are my thoughts on it...

Some people can "carb up" because they have a relatively high CCLL. You tend to see these posts either here or in the Extended Induction Forum, where folks are limiting themselves to 20 net carbs and still following the Induction phase rules and foods list. If you look through the OWL forum, you won't see any posts from folks who ate "alot" of carbs and still lost weight or were still in ketosis. That's because in OWL, you "carb up" in a controlled manner to see how many carbs your body can tolerate. We have some folks there who can tolerate 100 net carbs daily and still be in ketosis and still lose weight. Likewise, we have some folks who can only tolerate 20 net carbs. So the OWLers know how many carbs they can eat. I can eat up to 40 net carbs daily. If I wanted to I can eat a slice of pizza, still be in ketosis, and still lose weight. So, I wouldn't really be "carbing up": I'd only be eating what my body can tolerate.

The other curious thing about OWL is that some of the folks who do an extended Induction and stall find that their weight loss picks up when they move onto OWL.

I'm glad not2late posted her reply. I have the older version of the book and I was sure that Dr. Atkins suggested this for plateaus, or I would not have done it before. Yes, it worked for me! If I hadn't lost for a few weeks, I would have a carb day and then I was back to losing. I lost over 60 pounds last time on Atkins. I now know that I need to eat this way forever and won't make the mistake of going off this WOE again.
