    Help Help

Apparently there is no sugar free Viactiv product. I want to try viactiv...For anyone who does not know, Viactiv is a chewable calcium supplement for women...and yes, it has some sugar in it.

I am OWL by the way, not induction. I am on the dairy rung.

I have so much trouble remembering to take vitamins. I hate swallowing pills. I hate drinking powdery stuff. I have tried everything and always forget to take my vitamins. I put them by the bed, where I can see them etc....I just can't seem to get myself to swallow pills.

Viactiv chews provide 1000 mg of calcium a day plus vitamins D and K for bone health. I NEED that calcium. FOUR people in my family have osteoporosis and/or bone loss. I don't want that to happen to me!

There are 8 carbs in a daily serving of viactiv (2 chews).......will this be a huge detriment to my Atkins program? Can I work it in? It is only 6 grams of sugar altogether. (3 per chew) Maybe I can try taking one in the morning and one in the evening so I don't have a blood sugar spike???

I would appreciate feedback on this please :confused . As far as the chews triggering cravings.......My cravings are pretty much dead. I can see, smell pretty much any forbidden food (except onion rings lol) and have no craving problems.

I look forward to your suggestions!
    Thanks!

Eating that stuff is like eating a teaspoon of sugar. It will cause and insulin spike, since it has no fat or fiber to help blunt it. And since it's basically a calcium enriched chocolate bonbon, it might awaken your sweet tooth.

I'm not sure how old you are, but you might want to plug your menues into fitday and see what your daily calcium intake is like. If you choose the right veggies, especially if your in OWL, and with the amount of calcium you get from the dairy, you should be getting at least 1000 mg from your diet alone.

I am 33......I should have at least 1000 mg a day.

So you don't think if I take it with a fiber rich meal and protein it would help ease the potential "spike"?

I am so concerned about this. My mother recently fractured her back and has osteoporosis...I also have an uncle, and an aunt with it....and my dad has significant bone loss. :sadblinky

I eat lots of salad greens; spring mix, tomatoes, butter lettuce, radichio, Jicima. Sometimes spinach.

These are the easiest veggies for me to get in every day.

As for potential cravings...I think I would be willing to take that chance to just try it because I need that calcium and I doubt I am going to get enough from what I am eating now. If it wok eup the craving demon I would drop it immediately.

I was doing the fit day for a while, but have not been lately. Bad me :nono

      Thanks

Fighting bone lss is more important than eating an extra 8 carbs. I say go for it. If you find it does have a negative effect in the way of causing cravings or weight gain (which is unlikely), then reconsider.

Actually, once you reach age 18 for women, whatever calcium you have in your bones is what you're stuck with. The focus becomes less on "building bone" and more on preserving what you have.

The most effective way to strengthen your bones is to do weight bearing exercises--walking, running, etc. The only non-weight bearing exercise is swimming or exercising in a weight-less environment, which is why the astronauts experience bone-loss in 0 gravity.

I really suggest you go to your physician and get a DEXA-Scan, in light of your family history, to determine the strength of your bones. It's a painless test because it's just an X-Ray. Some doctors even have a DEXA-SCan machine in their offices so you don't have to travel to another facility. Likewise, you can use your fitday.com account to see how much dietary calcium you are already getting. Doing these little things might save you from taking unnecessary supplementation and since you already have problems remembering to take your other medications, you really should consider taking the time to see if you really need it in the first place.

As with all other supplements, too much calcium is just as bad as too little.
