  • Gall Bladder Removal and weight Loss

    Hi
i actually posted this on the newbies board earlier but was advised to put it on here.
Has anyone experienced any difficulties losing weight after Gall Bladder removal? My doctor has told me it's nigh impossible to do. I started piling on weight since I had mine removed 5 years ago. Is there anything I need to know - other than maybe getting a new doctor?

Well, I haven't had mine removed but my sister in law did, she lost 30 pounds on low carb w/ mountain biking as her excercise. You may have to put more effort into it, but obviously its not impossible!

Hi! I started Atkins 4 months after having my gall bladder removed. No problems here at all! IMHO...... a new doctor. :nod This is the first time I ever heard of anyone having problems with losing after gall bladder removal.

I had my gall bladder removed many years ago, and my DH had his removed 3 years ago, and I have lost 45lbs, and he 27 lbs. So I don't think gall bladder removal has any effect on weight loss!! Maybe check with another doctor,,,,,I've never heard of this before :no

I had my gall bladder removed at my highest weight and well...look at my stats. I think having it removed was probably the key to losing weight because having a diseased gallbladder made me sick almost everytime I ate and I had no energy. After it was gone I felt 110% better. And now that I've dropped 81 lbs I feel better than I have since my early 20's. The only reason I can think your doctor would say something like that is either a.) he/she really doesn't know what they're talking about or b.) trying to save the insurance provider money. Definately get a second opinion.

:wave :wave see we have lots of losers without gallbladders.

you my need some time for your body to make more bile in your liver as you are not going to have a reservoir of it to pump out at each meal but guess what bile is the bad cholesterol so you will be lowering your bad stuff even more eating Atkins.

                Happy low carbing.

Hey. Yeah I did have mine removed.. but every since I had complications with my gall bladder, and removed.. my weightloss has virtually stopped. I work myself hard everyday, and no results. So yes, I do believe the gallbladder being removed makes weight loss impossible.

                    Gall Bladder / Eating disorders

                    :joy
Thanks a lot to everyone who has answered my post - it's good to know that what I was told is almost certainly what I suspected - a load of rubbish. I was also told that the GB removal was responsible for my huge recent weight gain. I'm not eating appreciably more than I used to, I've always had a tendency to put on weight easily, but I think that it's more likely to be a change in lifestyle that's done it ie; moving from the country where I walked miles every day, to moving back to a city, where I don't. I can also put it down to an inherited tendency in my family, to get massive towards middle age - that and my greed for baked goods, bread, pastry etc.
I used to yo-yo diet a lot, either stuffing myself or literally starving myself. My typical favourite diet was a coffee in the morning followed by two crispbreads with lo-cal cottage chese and an apple at lunch. Diet packet soup and two crispbreads followed that for dinner, and that was it. I used to subsist on this for 6 months at a time and of course the pounds fell off. Some 17 or so years ago I existed for 9 months on 3 apples a day and vitamin tablets with a chicken salad once a week! When I began force-vomiting even that small amount, the penny dropped that I might have more than a weight problem! Years later when I had the GB surgery, I was asked if I'd ever had an eating disorder - I was told that gall stones were a common problemwith starvation dieters in later life - something to do with the body's management of cholestrol due to sheer starvation. I don't know how true that is, maybe it explains why I had the gall stones. I've surely felt a lot better since I got rid of the gall bladder, and that was some 5 years ago.
I only wish I'd picked up the Atkins book years before. It still feels weird to me to be on a diet where you can actually eat! Weird-actually it feels great!

most gallstones occur when the bile sits and sits because you are not being called upon to expell it and the stuff settles out in the crystal form anybody who has made salt crystals knows about this. Starvation diets would be an example of this sitting as would low fat diests.
When you eat a high fat meal your gallbladder is called upon to expell some bile to add in the digestion of the fats and if you got stones they can clog the ducts and the presure from the gb contracting to expell the bile causes pain thus doctors mistakenly thought high fat foods causes stones.

I had mine out in January and have lost 20 pounds since. I have always lost slowly and only have 10 more to go! It was a year ago yesterday that I started and have lost 70 pounds total.

I wish I had known this 4 years ago. My dad was diagnosed with gall stones after having his first stroke. The doctors put him on a completely fat free diet and his last two years alive were absolute misery for him - he'd never been particularly overweight and he loved food.
